Syllabus for Spanish I

Instructor: Haylee Burge Hbb70@msstate.edu Textbook: Nexos by Spain, Long, Carriera Materials needed: Students are expected to bring a three-ring binder, paper, pen/pencil, highlighters, and dictionary to class with them every day. Course Description Students begin to develop the ability to communicate in Spanish about themselves and their immediate environments using simple sentences. They will be able to speak, write, read, and listen in Spanish on a beginner level. They will study the cultures and communities of Spanish-speakers as well as make comparisons between the Spanish language and their own. Students will also make connections to other subject areas while communicating in Spanish. Goals Communicate in Spanish Students will practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing in Spanish by performing simple tasks and activities in the classroom. Understand other Cultures Students will begin to develop an understanding that they are not alone in the world and that some cultures and societies are very different than their own. Connect to other content areas through Spanish Students will use the language study to connect to their other course of language (ie Latin roots in Biology) Learn more about their own culture By studying other cultures, students will learn more about when makes their own culture unique, and compare and contrast these findings with the cultures studied in class. Participate in the global community Students will use their study of a foreign language to communicate with speakers of that language, both locally and globally. Students will use this personal connection to learn more about issues across the world. Content to be studied in the first quarter: Introductory Unit: Greetings Classroom Expressions Alphabet & Phonetics Theme: Personal and Family Life Physical Characteristics Family Members

Occupations Assessments: Students will be assessed both formally and informally throughout the semester. These assessments will include class discussions, quizzes, tests, and an oral presentation. Tardies: After three tardies in a nine-week period, I will report the student to the principal. Homework: Students will be given homework an average of two times a week. However, if I notice that students are struggling with a certain concept or are not putting forth effort in class, I will assign more homework at my discretion. Class participation: In a foreign language classroom, it is vital that students actively participate. In most cases, the classroom is the only time in which the students will practice the target language. If I notice that students are not listening or participating, I will talk to them about the importance of it and that this is causing them to miss vital skills and information. If a student wants to exceed in and out of the class, he/she must be an active participant. Students will prove an exit ticket at the end of class. This will require the student to write a sentence that they heard spoken incorrectly in class (without naming the student who said it), and they will write the sentence correctly. This will show that the students paid attention with comprehension. Grading: Student grades will be given on a point system. Each grade that the student receives (4 tests, 5 quizzes, 1 group oral presentation, daily class work, and homework) will be worth a certain number of points. At the end of each term, the points possible will be added to determine the students average. Possible Points: Tests Quizzes Oral Presentation Daily Work Homework 400 points 250 points 200 points 100 points 50 points Grading Scale 900-1000 points 800-900 points 700-800 points 600-700 points Below 600 A B C D F
