Welcome to Mr. Crewes Room!

Welcome to Earth Science! Check your schedule, this is room 114. If this is where you are supposed to be, Im Mr. Crewes. Im looking forward to an exciting year continuing with our new technology. I have high expectations of all my students so be prepared. I dont think any of the following is going to be a surprise, but just in case we will go over it. The common school wide expectations are on display in the front of my room. Please be aware of and abide by all the common expectations. Here some more basics in my classroom: 1. GRADES: The breakdown of grade weights (normalized) for this class are as follows: Final Exam Tests Quizzes Homework/Classwork Labs/Projects Tardies WU/Journal Personal Management/Responsibility 20% 30% 10% 10% 10% 10% 5% 5% 100%

CLASS INFO AND CONTACTS: You can get to my website through the Elk Rapids High School webpage. Just click on my name and follow the link. This website has various files of importance and also has a link to the daily assignment calendar. You can access this calendar with an iPad app, within Google Calendar or on the website directly. There are three different spots so there should be no excuses. This is where you will look if you need an answer to the question What did we do yesterday? or What are we doing today? I plan on integrating this website with many of our daily activities, so become familiar with it, and make sure it works correctly. We will set everything up once the iPads are distributed. BEHAVIOR AND EXPECTATIONS: See poster. Basically be nice, be respectful, be responsible, and try to use your manners. ATTITUDE: Your personal management/responsibility grade has a lot to do with your attitude: whether you are responsible or not, and basically if you make my life easy or hard. Its your choice, based on your actions. BE RESPOSIBLE LEARNERS AND ACTIVE LISTENERS: Arrive on time, with all your materials, ask questions, engage in conversation, advocate for yourself, seek help when needed, finish assignments and homework, TURN THEM IN, and most of all, use your head. RESPECT MY ROOM AND EQUIPMENT: Please try to keep things clean and organized. Please return things to where you found them. It is also important that you keep your hands to yourselves unless directed otherwise. There may be things around my classroom that could be dangerous, or are fragile. For those sitting at lab tables, this includes the gas jets and water faucets. I know they are shiny, and you cant help touching them, but please try to refrain. If it doesnt belong to you, and you dont have permission, please dont touch. BE PREPARED: Please bring the following to class everyday: textbook, iPad, folder or 3-ring binder, pencils, pens, paper, erasers, and scientific calculator*, along with other material to keep you busy if completed with class work. Being prepared has a direct correlation to your overall happiness in this class. If you come to class unprepared, you will lose points and may have to deal with detentions if the problems continue. If you miss school, or will miss school, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO COLLECT ASSIGNMENTS, EITHER MISSED OR EXPECTED. I WILL NOT TRACK YOU DOWN TO TELL YOU WHAT YOU MISSED , OR WHAT IS DUE. ITS ALL ON YOU. Its the big leagues, time to step up. RESPECT THE RIGHT TO USE YOUR IPAD, OR YOU WILL LOSE IT: The use of your iPad is a privilege. If you abuse that right, you will not be able to use it in my class. Do not play games, watch videos, check your email, or anything non-class related, unless, I give you permission. If it is not a designated time to use your iPad, please make sure it is closed and on your desk. If you are using it in class, please make sure it is flat or slightly tilted so I can see what you are up to. WARM-UPS: There will be some type of warm-up activity every day. They are a separate part of your grade. When the bell rings, you are expected to be engaged and working on your warm-up. I will be using Edmodo for this. If you have used it before, sweet. If not, we will all help each other. Parents, if you would like to have access to your students Edmodo group, just ask them and they can show you what to do. If they are unable to show you, email me and I will set you up.

10. EXTRA-CREDIT: I dont give traditional extra-credit. Stay up on homework, study for tests, and you wont need it. The extent of th e extra credit I do give is an occasional question on a test, or, I may give extra points when students have gone above and beyond the expectations on a HW assignment. Dont rely on extra credit because it may not happen very o ften. 11. LABS: We will be performing labs in this class. Please use common sense and proper lab etiquette while performing those labs. Zeros will be given if improper practices are observed, and may also be issued for future labs as well. 12. LATE WORK: When something is due, it is due that class period. If you have problems meeting specific due dates please talk to me before the assignment is due. I will be more sympathetic if I know you are having difficulty beforehand, rather than when you should be turning your assignment in. You may turn assignments in late for a penalty, up to a certain point. Exceptionally late work (previous chapters or units) will not be accepted. You will be asked to leave the room if classwork is not completed and discussions of that work is planned. You will be responsible for what you missed while out of the room. Here is the breakdown for late work: 1-2 day late 3-5 days late Previous unit 75% credit 50% credit NC*

13. COMMUNICATION: My door is always open. Come talk to me. It doesnt even have to be class related. If you have a question, just ask me. You can email (dcrewes@erschools.com), or use the Edmodo messaging service, or you can even shoot me an iMessage on your iPad. Just use my ER email address, and I will gladly chat through my iPad. 14. HAVE FUN! Remember that 99 % of life is what you make of it. A positive outlook is the key. Save the complaining and excuses. Work and effort are inevitable, make the best of it. SPECIFIC CLASS POLICIES (I will explain): Food, drinks, electronic devices, music, dress code, language, manners, hallway behavior, Book Cover, class supplies, calculators, tardies and bells, assigned seats, hall pass, herding, absenteeism and absent work, making up missed tests and work, lunch tutoring.. Hints for Success Maintain homework schedule and finish all daily assignments. ASK QUESTIONS after checking your assignments. Keep detailed and organized notes of topics covered during class time. If confused or unclear on a topic, ask questions. If you are still unclear, go online and see what you can find and bring it in. I love class discussions. Get organized - purchase a three-ring binder and maintain it daily, and use your iPad for organization Utilize your classmates: Each of you have a unique interpretation of the material covered in class. Your individual insights and techniques can help not only you, but it can also assist others to comprehend the material. Get together with friends and classmates and discuss things that might be unclear. Often, a classmate may be able to explain things in a different manner than I can. Get help BEFORE a test or quiz. Your homework is designed to indicate when you might need more help mastering a given topic. If you are having difficulty, seek help before you take a quiz or test.
