The Town of Darien has established a permanent drug collection program by partnering the Darien Health Department and Police Department to install a drop box for unwanted medications in the police station lobby. The program aims to reduce drug abuse and protect the environment by providing a way for citizens to safely dispose of expired and unused prescription drugs any time without questions. Most young people abusing prescription drugs get them from family medicine cabinets, so the program encourages proper disposal to prevent misuse and raiding of family drug supplies. Residents can now drop off unwanted medications for safe incineration instead of waiting for periodic take-back days.

Properly disposing of excess drugs is everyones responsibility as a matter of public health and safety. More than 70 percent of young people abusing prescription pain relievers get them through friends or family, a statistic that includes raiding the family medicine cabinet. Now Darien citizens wont have to wait for a specific take-back day to clean out their medicine cabinets. Discarded medications will be processed as abandoned property and safely incinerated The lobby of Darien Police Headquarters is open to the public 24 hours every day. Get rid of any unwanted, expired or unused drugs now. They can be dropped off FREE with no questions asked! Please, do not bring needles; this program is for meds ONLY.
