January 23, 2013 To Whom It May Concern My name is Shauna Kerr and I am a teacher with the Calgary Board of Education. I have been teaching for 18 years and am currently the Math/Science Learning Leader at Senator Patrick Burns Junior High. I am writing this letter on behalf of Adam Elford. Adam worked with me in my Grade nine classroom during the months of November and December, 2012 as a part of his Semester Three Field Experience through the University of Calgary's Education program. Adam brought significant and varied skills into the classroom with him. Adam had prior experience working with youth through a variety of roles including coaching. He communicated effectively prior to his arrival at the school and was well prepared by his start date. When he arrived he was always prompt and professional. He demonstrated effective interpersonal skills and brought a very strong work ethic. He learned routines quickly and maintained them through his own practice. Adam integrated himself into both the school and the classroom in a very positive way from the moment that he began in the school. He was comfortable and confident in moving around the classroom offering support when he saw the need and the students accepted him quickly as a part of our classroom community. During teaching time his lessons, lesson plans, curricular ties, timing and materials were well thought out and prepared in advance. His own personal subject knowledge was always evident in both strength and scope. Adam consistently demonstrated that he was organized and efficient. His lessons used multiple forms of instruction, including inquiry activities, class discussions, individual reflection, labs, visual demonstrations, video and group work. The students appreciated that the class experiences were interesting and varied. Adam's practice was very student centered, he often reflected on his lessons and made changes and adapted his delivery to ensure he was meeting the needs of all his students. Adam developed positive relationships with the students that allowed him to better understand their individual needs and how to best support their learning style. Adam was consistently able to apply provided feedback and improve his practice. We worked collaboratively on both lesson creation and lesson delivery and he was effective and flexible. Adam also participated in the larger school program in many ways. He was a supervisor on a field trip, attended parent teacher interviews, worked with the grade nine team for our Friday CTF inquiry work, and involved himself in school spirit activities. Adam was able to assess a situation and decide where he would be of the greatest assistance; the fact that he stepped up and took initiative on his own is a great skill to bring to any situation. Adam questioned and made astute observations on all aspects of the classroom experience. After working with Adam in my classroom I would not hesitate to recommend him for a position within a school. He is a young, bright, skilled individual who demonstrated a passion for what he was doing. He would be an asset to any team, bringing leadership, hard work and enthusiasm to the group. I would be happy to work with him again as a colleague.
