ELA Curriculum Map

1st Quarter
Language: L.2.1a I can Identify nouns (including collective nouns). L.2.1b I can identify irregular plural nouns. L.2.1c I can identify reflexive nouns (myself, ourselves, etc). L.2.1e I can use adjectives to modify nouns. L.2.2a I can properly capitalize words (names, holidays, products, geography, etc). L.2.4d I can identify compound words and understand their meaning.

Speaking and Listening: S.L. 2.1 I can participate in peer, partner and small group conversations. S.L. 2.1a I can follow agreed upon rules. S.L. 2.1b I can build on others thoughts in conversations by linking their comments to the remarks of others. S.L.2.1c I can ask for clarification or further explanation about a topic which is under discussion. S.L. 2.6 I can produce complete sentences while speaking.

Writing: W.2.8 I can recall information from sources to answer questions.

Reading Fundamentals: R.F. 2.3 I can apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills to decode a word. R.F. 2.3a I can distinguish long and short vowels in one-syllable words. R.F. 2.3c I can decode regularly spelled two-syllable words with long vowels.

Reading Informational:

R.L. 2.1 I can answer who, what, where, when, why and how questions to demonstrate learning in informational text. R.L.2.4 I can determine word meaning in information text that is relevant to the grade level. Reading literature: R.L. 2.3 I can describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges. R.L. 2.5 I can describe the overall story structure including the beginning and ending actions. R.L. 2.7 I can use information gained from pictures and print to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of characters, setting and plot.

2nd Quarter Language: L.2. 1 I can demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar when writing and speaking specifically using verbs. L.2.1d I can form and use past tenses of regular and irregular verbs. L.2.1e I can use adverbs to change verbs. L.2 1f I can create, expand, and rearrange simple and compound sentences. L.2.2 I can understand and apply the use of English caps, proper punctuation and spelling in a sentence. L.2.4a I can use sentence-level context as a clue to the meaning of a unknown word. L.2.4b I can determine the meaning of a new word when known prefix is added to a known word. L.2.4c I can use a known root word to know the meaning of similar words with the same root. L.2.4e I can begin using a dictionary and glossary.

Speaking and Listening: S.L. 2.2 I can recount key ideas or details from a text or oral presentation. S.L. 2.4 I can tell a story or recount an experience with appropriate facts and descriptive details.

Reading Fundamentals: R.F. 2.3b I can use spelling-sound correspondences for additional common vowel teams. R.F. 2.3d I can decode words with common prefixes and suffixes.

R.F. 2.3e I can decode words with inconsistent but common spelling-sound correspondences. R.F. 2.4c I can use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary.

Reading Literature: R.L. 2.2 I can recount stories from different cultures to determine the message or moral. R.L. 2.4 I can explain how words and phrases supply rhythm and meaning is a story, poem or song. R.L. 2.6 I can understand differences in point of view of characters. R.L. 2.9 I can compare and contrast two versions of the same story.

Reading Informational: R.I. 2.5 I can know and use text features to find information. R.I. 2.7 I can use images and diagrams to help clarify a text.

Writing: I can write an opinion piece.

3rd Quarter:
Language: L.2.2c I can use an apostrophe to form contractions and frequently occurring possessives. L.2.2d I can generalize learned spelling patterns when writing words. L.2.4 I can clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple meaning words and phrases. L.2.5a I can create real-life connections between words and their uses. L.2.6 I can use words and phrases including adjectives and adverbs to describe.

Reading Fundamentals: R.F. 2.3f I can recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words.

Reading Informational:

R.I. 2.2 I can identify the main topic of a multi-paragraph text or within a single paragraph. R.I. 2.6 I can identify the authors purpose in a text. R.I. 2.8 I can describe how reasons support specific points presented by two texts on the same topic.

Writing: W.2.3 I can write a narrative piece. W.2.5 I can revise and edit a piece of writing.

4th Quarter:
Language: L.2.3 I can use language and conventions when writing, speaking, reading or listening. L.2.3a I can compare formal and informal uses of English.

Speaking and Listening: S.L. 2.3 I can ask and answer questions about what a speaker says. S.L. 2.5 I can create audio, add drawings or displays to stories or recounts of experiences when appropriate to clarify ideas, thoughts and feelings.

Writing: W.2.2 I can create and informative/explanatory piece of writing. W.2.7 I can participate in shared research and writing projects W.2.6 I can use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing.

Reading Fundamentals: R.F. 2.4 I can read with sufficient accuracy and fluency. R.F. 2.4a I can read grade-level text with purpose, understanding and expression. R.F. 2.4b I can read grade-level text orally, accurately and fluently.

Reading Informational: R.I. 2.3 I can describe connections between series of historical events, scientific ideas, or steps in technical procedures in a text. R.I. 2.9 I can compare and contrast the most important points presented in two texts by the same topic. R.I. 2.10 I can read and comprehend informational texts for grades 2-3 by the end of the year.

Reading Literature: R.L. 2.10 I can read and comprehend literature, stories and poetry in grades 2-3 by the end of the year.
