Impact of Social Media

What is Social Media and its Impact on our life

Social media is the collective of online communications channels dedicated to community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration. Websites and applications dedicated to forums, micro blogging, social networking, social bookmarking, social cu ration, and wikis are among the different types of social media. Social media is becoming an integral part of life online as social websites and applications proliferate. Most traditional online media include social components, such as comment fields for users. The term "social media" is likely to lose meaning as the social aspect of the Web becomes increasingly taken for granted.

Impact of social media in our life

In the latest India Today Independence Day Special titled You are the power, Shri Narendra Modi has written about the increasing power of social media and described it as a medium that enables expression, equality and empowerment. Shri Modi has unequivocally opposed any attempt to further political control over social media. At the same time, he has spoken against slander and urged all to respect the sanctity of the medium and use it as a platform for nation building.

Social Media is becoming a very important thing in our life . There are many youngsters who believe that they can live without family but cant live without social media. Their day start with the good morning wish from their friends and ends with saying good night to his/her friends. They share their pictures their and messages with friends. Study online. read newspaper online. Solve online papers and discussing their problems with friends and teachers. Sell/Buy things online. Matrimonial site is becoming very popular medium to find life partner online. People search jobs and get good offers and good salary according to their qualification.

Impact of Social Media in Rural india

India is not only about big cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bangalore, or Hyderabad, there are 638,596 (according to 2001 Census) villages in the country. A study shows that only 1/3 of the Indian internet-using community is formed by internetsavvy people in the 7 major cities in India, while the rest is from other parts of the nation, including rural areas.

India is the sixth fastest growing social media community in the globe. The advent of internet in remote rural areas has made this possible for India. Rural India is an untapped mine of possible potential for Telcos. Assumingly, the telecom penetration in urban India is reaching a saturation state, realizing which they are trying to break into the rural market. This is bringing in a change in the socio-economic condition in the rural areas.

Impact of Social Media To cite an example: Earlier, people were afraid to avail internet banking services for security reasons, but now they are using and accessing online bank account for faster and better processing. A few years back, there were a number of reasons that made 'easy access to internet', a distant dream for those 70% people of India, who were living in villages. Some did not feel any need, some did not have a personal internet connection, some did not have a PC, some could not afford internet, while some lacked proper guidance. On the contrary, the picture in urban and semi-urban areas was quite different. However, this was a picture of late nineties, and 2011s is quite unlike. IMRB says that internet penetration in rural India will double by the end of this year, which means there will be a projected increment in internet penetration in rural India over the last year. This discussion will remain incomplete if we will not add the example of our own town

Chanderi.
Chanderi a small town in Madhya Pradesh .chanderi is mainly famous for its sarees . it is famous for its historical buildings . peoples of chanderi are very simple . non literacy and poverty is the major problems here. Most of the people are weavers and they spend their time in weaving saree because it is the only soured of income . In their houses all members from children to grandparents all are busy in doing work for saree .when DFF Digital Empowerment Foundation started its project named CHANDERIYAAN in feb 2009 with the help of DEIT and Media Lab Asia it was the first step of internet and social media in chanderi. They started to learn students basic computer courses and English courses and spread awareness with their different programs After some time they setup WI FI connection and distribute it with public. Now we can see a clear difference in the youth of chanderi. Most of the students use Facebook and E-mail on their phone. They share photos with friends. And now they are also using social media for selling their sarees and dress material. They create their facebook page to promote chanderisarees and to promote tourism in chanderi. They search design online and communicate with their customers Directly using e-mail or any chat client or facebook. As the growth of internet users is increasing people are becoming more aware about social media . I can find that my students are using online discussion sites to discuss their queries. They use online study material for learning and and doing many more . Now I am seeing that parents are also taking interest in social media they want to learn internet to mix-up with their young children. And to communicate with them as most of the students of chanderi has to leave their home for further study.

Impact of Social Media . Now to discuss this topic we read some

surveys .

Study: Social tools enhance workplace productivity

by MadhulikaChowdhary Research firmIpsos recently did a study for Microsoft to assess the role of social media and research tools at the workplace. The study covered around 10,000 respondents across 32 different countries, including India, from March 25, 2013 to April 24, 2013. Listed below are some key findings relevant in the Indian context.

61% of Asia-Pacific employees said that social media tools at workplace help increase their productivity 38% felt that their companies underestimated the value of social media, often restricting its use Indians use social media tools much more than their peers across the globe 71% of the Indian surveyed felt that social media and research tools increased their workplace collaboration and enhanced their team work 9 out of 10 Indian workers use email, with 8 in 10 using IM or video conferencing, and about 3/4 of the total using team sites/intranets 57% of employees in the Asia-Pacific region wanted to be more involved in decisions regarding new technologies and tools at their workplaces, but internal social networks and micro blogging were restricted by one quarter of Indian organizations According to RamkumarPichai, General Manager, Microsoft Office Division, such restrictions were forcing many employees to bring in social networking into the workplace through the backdoor. The study also highlighted that men were more likely than women to attribute higher productivity levels to social tools in a professional setting, while women were more likely to believe their company restricts the use of social tools.

Impact of Social Media Source: Business Today According to another survey by AIMA, national apex body of the management profession in India, more than one-third of respondents that were studied believed that social media participation has improved their brand equity as well as stakeholder engagement. However, 56% of firms believed that social networking sites distract their employees and another 37% believed that it would hamper internal and external communication. The study also reported that Indian enterprises are yet to embrace social media for business though nearly all individual executives are using social media for personal or professional purposes.

Every coin has two sides

Survey: What do marketers think about social media?

In words of Kanksha Barman

SEOmoz and HubSpots annual industry survey on the state of SEO and internet marketing, based on responses from 6,491 marketers, has some interesting insights on marketers and how they use social media for business. Here are some key points:

44.4% of the survey respondents felt they had either expert or advanced social media abilities. Thus, marketers are showing increased confidence in the medium, and their competence in it. Facebook and Twitter, as expected, are the most popular social networks for marketing. However Google+, YouTube and LinkedIn are also popular, as are company blogs. Here is the complete list of platforms:

Impact of Social Media

Company blogs are especially popular they are used by 76.9% of the respondents for content marketing. This highlights the importance of having a tailor-made platform to showcase your own content. LinkedIns does not feature very high on the list of preferred platforms for marketing it takes the 5th position however, 74.1% of the marketers use LinkedIn for branding purposes. This is interesting, as LinkedIn does not have as visually appealing an interface to showcase branding, as other image-focused platforms such as Facebook or Pinterest. The theory put forward in the HubSpot blog is that this could be branding via employees, as LinkedIn is a great way to focus on the talents that employees bring to a company. 52.3% marketers use forums for customer service. This correlates well with the results of a previous study by Incyte Group, which focused on what consumers want from brand interactions, and showed that rather than have brands be a part of their social networking experience, customers prefer to have company website and branded communities or forums that function in a more open and social way. 60.2% respondents put focus on analytics in their social media management tools.

Use of Social Media in Customer Service

Social Media allows you to peek into the daily life of your customers and potential customers. It is like a window into their life for you to listen, understand and improve your offerings. It allows you to stay on top or at least at the same level as your competitor. Make a personal relation with your customer, make sense of the new generation of customers who surely think and act differently across continents, understand exactly what people are talking about you good or bad and in the whole process improve your brand to the point where they just not buy your offerings but also advocate for it.

The social media has become very powerful and it made even editors at Oxford English Dictionary to break their rule. The word 'tweet' (with lower case 't') will now be part of OED as verb and noun.

Impact of Social Media

How often we use Social Media:

Social networks like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have rapidly become a part of many peoples everyday lives, especially for those younger generations who have grown up with so much technology at their fingertips. I have often heard that there is no time for social media. To be sure, its an investment of time, but I actually think its often a more efficient use of time that offers better processes to manage our work, and though the challenges can be huge, a social presence is becoming a necessity for everyone. When I first started using Twitter and Facebook I was hesitant but I was quickly amazed at how it helped me process and crystalize ideas, but most importantly it challenged me to stay current and engaged in the ongoing public conversation that surrounded our work. I very quickly learnt a lot about the organisation, the work we did and the people we were supporting. I am a teacher and these platform help to to stay connected with my students. And now I am seeing that people are spending more time on Facebook and twitter. Since using social media I have become exposed to far more than I would never have found on my own. By following the right people, I receive updates from journalists, teachers, guides and members of the public and supporters, in a way When it has been used well I have found it to be a great way, particularly in large organizations, to connect different areas of the organization and to increase understanding of our work internally. This improves the capacity of an organization to collaborate, communicate and drive change collectively that was never possible before. I have genuinely enjoyed the personal feedback, passionate support and the thoughtful dialogue that social media has allowed me to experience and I believe that without social media our relationships with our supporters would be far less rich. I daily update my blog and Facebook page it is becoming a routine work for me and I cant live without it.

I love to share my pictures with my friends and family and when they like it I feel very happy Rahulkoli
I use face book to send messages and chat with friends it is very easy to use and I love it Deepak

Impact of Social Media

Social Media as a bridge of communication between countries

Social media can help you stay in touch with people across the world, view their photos and see their activities. You can communicate in many ways using social media, you can send messages, post comments or chat in real time when other people are online at the same time as you. You can also send "status updates", this a remarkable part of social networking which allows you to let all the people in your social network know what your current activities or thoughts are. Reading status updates is an easy way to keep up to date with what the people in your social network have been up to. You can also add comments to status updates to let your friends know what you think about their activities. You can send messages using social media, these are just like emails but are built into the social media websites, so you can easily add links, photos or videos to your messages. There is no limits o boundries between countries and people . There is a famous song in india

As a rule, its a good idea to have a look at what others are doing before putting your own entries up onto these networks. But once youre in the swing of it, they can be a great additional resource for finding things out and who knows, you might have the answer to someone elses query and be able to help immediately!

Impact of Social Media

Positive and negative impact of social media

In this category we want the most innovative uses of social media and what impact theyve had. This category is for the best use of social media in the public sector. Some examples are that the project could be using social media as a delivery method for a wider marketing campaign or it could be the implementation of social media across the company. Social networking communities are here to stay. Facebook has over 500 million users, while Twitter has over 200 million. Thats not even counting blogs or YouTube video blogs. Theres no doubt that students are actively engaged in online communities, but what kind of effects are these sites having and how can parents counteract the bad and bolster the positive?

The Positive
1. Social networking has increased the rate and quality of collaboration for people. They are better able to communicate meeting times or share information quickly, which can increase productivity and help them learn how to work well in groups. 2. Social networking teaches students skills theyll need to survive in the business world. Being able to create and maintain connections to many people in many industries is an integral part of developing a career or building a business. 3. By spending so much time working with new technologies, people develop more familiarity with computers and other electronic devices. With the increased focus on technology in education and business, this will help people build skills that will aid them throughout their lives. 4. The ease with which a youth can customize their profile makes them more aware of basic aspects of design and layout that are not often taught in schools. Building resumes and personal websites, which are increasingly used as online portfolios, benefit greatly from the skills obtained by customizing the layout and designs of social networking profiles. 5. The ease and speed with which users can upload pictures, videos or stories has resulted in a greater amount of sharing of creative works. Being able to get instant feedback from friends and family on their creative outlets helps students refine and develop their artistic abilities and can provide much needed confidence or help them decide what career path they may want to pursue.
Most of the web sites allow you to access through facebook so you dont need to create separate id for using their sites

Teenagers who see friends smoking and drinking alcohol in photographs posted on social networking sites are more likely to indulge in such behaviour themselves, a new study suggests.
).

The Negative
1. Many students rely on the accessibility of information on social media specifically and the web in general to provide answers. That means a reduced focus on learning and retaining information. 2. Students who attempt to multi-task, checking social media sites while studying, show reduced academic performance (http://viralms.com/blog/2011/04/how-social-media-affects-students/). Their ability to concentrate on the task at hand is significantly reduced by the distractions that are brought about by YouTube, stumbleupon, Facebook or Twitter. 3. The more time students spend on social sites, the less time they spend socializing in person. Because of the lack of body signals and other nonverbal cues, like tone and inflection, social networking sites are not an adequate replacement for face-to-face communication. Students who spend a great deal of time on social networking are less able to effectively communicate in person. The popularity of social media, and the speed at which information is published, has created a lax attitude towards proper spelling and grammar. The reduces a students ability to effectively write without relying on a computers spell check feature. (source)

4. The degree to which private information is available online and the anonymity the internet seems to provide has made students forget the need to filter the information they post. Many colleges and potential employers investigate an applicants social networking profiles before granting acceptance or interviews. Most students dont constantly evaluate the content theyre publishing online, which can bring about negative consequences months or years down the road. 5.There is a big rise in the no of cyber crime registered. Cyber crime is the biggest obstacle in the road of social media there is a need to discuss it separately .

Main Types of Cyber crime

Against Individual

i.Drug trafficking
Drug traffickers are increasingly taking advantage of the Internet to sell illegal substances through encrypted e-mail. Some drug traffickers arrange deals at internet cafes, use courier Web sites to track illegal packages of pills, and exchange

recipes for amphetamines in restricted-access chat rooms. The increase in Internet drug trades could also be attributed to the lack of face-to-face communication. Such virtual exchanges allow more intimidated individuals to more comfortably purchase illegal drugs. The sketchy effects that are associated with drug trades are severely minimized and the filtering process that comes with physical interaction fades away. o Offensive content & Harassment The content in websites and other electronic communications may be distasteful, obscene or offensive for a variety of reasons. In some cases these communications may be illegal. Around 25 jurisdictions place limits on certain speech and ban racist, blasphemous, politically subversive, libelous or slanderous, seditious, or inflammatory material that tends to incite hate crimes. The extent of these unlawful communications varies greatly between countries, and even within nations. It is a sensitive case in which the courts can become involved in arbitrating between groups with strong beliefs. One part of Internet pornography that has been the target of the strongest efforts at curtailment is child pornography. Whereas the content may be offensive in a non-specific way, harassment directs obscenities and derogatory comments at specific individuals focusing for example on gender, race, religion, nationality, sexual orientation. This often occurs in chat rooms, through newsgroups, and by sending hate e-mail to interested parties. Any comment that may be found disrespectful or offensive is considered harassment.

2. Against Individual Property

o

Electronic Funds Transfer Fraud

Electronic funds transfer systems have begun to increase, and so has the risk that such transactions may be taken into hold and diverted. Valid credit card numbers can be easily intercepted electronically, as well as physically; the digital information stored on a card can be recreated. In 1994, a Russian hacker, Vladimir Levin, operating from St Petersburg, retrieved the computers of Citibank's central wire transfer department, and transferred funds from large corporate accounts to other accounts which had been opened by his subordinates in The United States. The above form of computer-related crime is not inevitably mutually exclusive, and need not occur in isolation. One robs telecommunications services and uses them for aimed vandalism, fraud, or in furtherance of a criminal conspiracy. Computer-related crime may be intensive in nature, combining two or more of the general forms.

Dissemination of Offensive Materials

Content considered by some people to be objectionable abundantly exists in cyberspace. This includes, among much else, sexually explicit materials, racist propaganda, and instructions for the fabrication of inflammatory and explosive devices. Telecommunications systems can also be used for harassing, threatening or invasive communications, from the traditional obscene telephone call to its contemporary manifestation in "cyber-stalking", in which persistent messages are sent to an unwilling recipient. In one case, a man allegedly stole nude photographs of his former girlfriend and her new boyfriend and posted them on the Internet, along with her name, address and telephone number. The unfortunate couple, received phone calls and e-mails from strangers as far away as Denmark who said they had seen the photos on the Internet. Investigations also revealed that the surmise was maintaining records about the woman's movements and compiling information about her family. Computer networks may also be used in advancement of extortion. In England, financial institutions were reported to have paid portentous amounts to sophisticated computer criminals who threatened to wipe out computer systems. An article ingeminated four incidents between 1993 and 1995 in which a total of 42.5 million Pounds Sterling were paid by senior executives of the organizations concerned, who were convinced of the extortionists' capacity to crash their computer systems.

3. Against Society
o

Cyber-bullying & Cyber-stalking

Cyber-bullying is the harmful use of the Internet and related technologies to harm other people, in a deliberate, repeated, and hostile manner. As it has become more often in society, particularly among young people, legislation and awareness campaigns have arisen to combat it. Cyber-bullying has subsequently been defined as "when the Internet, cell phones or other devices are used to send or post text or images for a particular purpose to hurt or embarrass another person". Cyber-bullying can be as simple as continuing to send e-mail to someone who has said they want no further contact with the sender, but it may also include threats, sexual remarks, pejorative labels , ganging up on victims by making them the subject of ridicule in forums, and posting false statements as fact aimed at humiliation. Cyber-stalking is the use of the Internet or other electronic means to stalk an individual, a group of individuals, or an organization. It may include false accusations, making threats, identity theft, and damage to data or equipment, the solicitation of minors for sex, or gathering information in order to harass. The definition of "harassment" must meet the criterion that a reasonable person, in possession of similar information, would regard it as sufficient to cause another reasonable person distress. Cyber stalking is different from spatial stalking. However, it sometimes leads to it, or is accompanied by it.

How does Cyber bullying affect you?

o Cyber bullying vs. Cyber stalking The practice of cyber bullying is not limited to children, while the behavior is identified by the same definition in adults; the distinction in age groups is sometimes referred to as cyber stalking or cyber harassment when perpetrated by adults toward adults, sometimes directed on the basis of sex. Common tricks used by cyber stalkers are to vandalize a search engine or encyclopedia, to threaten a victim's earnings, employment, reputation, or safety. Repetition of such actions against a target by an adult constitutes cyber stalking.

4. Against Private Organizations

o

Theft of telecommunications services

The "phone preachers" of three decades ago set a precedent for what has become a major criminal industry today. By gaining access to an organizations telephone switchboard (PBX) individuals or criminal organizations can obtain access to dial-in/dial-out circuits and then make their own calls or sell call time to third parties. Offenders may gain access to the switchboard by impersonating a technician, by fraudulently obtaining an employee's access code, or by using hack software available on the internet. Few sophisticated offenders loop between PBX systems to evade detection. Other forms of service theft include capturing "calling card" details and on-selling calls charged to the calling card account, and counterfeiting or illicit reprogramming of stored value telephone cards. It has been suggested that as long ago as 1990, security failures at one of the major telecommunications carrier cost approximately 290 million, and that more recently, up to 5% of total industry turnover has been lost to fraud. Costs to individual subscribers may also be significant. It has been recorded in one case, in the United States; computer hackers had illegally obtained access to Scotland Yard's telephone network and made 620,000 worth of international calls for which Scotland Yard was responsible.

o Telecommunications Piracy Digital technology permits perfect reproduction and has simplified the dissemination of print, graphics, sound, and multimedia combinations. The temptation to reproduce copyrighted material for personal purpose, for sale at a lower price, or indeed, for free distribution, has proven irresistible to many. This piracy has caused considerable concern to owners of copyrighted material. The Software Publishers Association has computed that approximately $7.4 billion worth of software was lost to piracy in 1993 with $2 billion of that being stolen from the Internet. It was found that, a copy of the most recent James Bond Film The World is not enough was available free on the internet before its official release. When creators of a work, are unable to profit from their creations, there can be a chilling effect on creative

effort generally, in addition to financial loss.

5. Against Government/ nation

o Electronic Vandalism and Extortion As never before, western industrialized society is interdependent upon complex data processing and telecommunications systems. Any damage to, or interference with, any of these systems can lead to harmful consequences. Whether incited by curiosity or vindictiveness electronic intruders cause disoblige at best, and have the potential for inflicting massive harm. While this potential has yet to be cognized, a number of individuals and protest groups have hacked the official web pages of various governmental and commercial organizations. Defense planners around the world are considerably investing in information warfare-- means of interrupting the information technology infrastructure of defense systems. Attempts were made to interrupt the computer systems of the Sri Lankan Government and of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization at the time of 1999 bombing of Belgrade. Recently, an extortionist in Eastern Europe acquired the credit card details of customers of a North American based on-line music retailer, and published some on the Internet when the retailer refused to accept his demands.

Cyber Warfare and Terrorism

Government officials and Information Technology refuge specialists have acknowledged a significant rise in Internet problems and server scans since early 2001. But there is a growing apprehension among central officials that such intrusions are part of a well thought-out effort by cyber terrorists, foreign intelligence services, or other groups to map potential security holes in critical systems. A cyber terrorist is someone who intimidates or coerces a government or organization to continue his or her political or social objectives by introducing computer-based attack against computers, network, and the information stored on them. Cyber terrorism in general, may be defined as an act of terrorism which has taken place through the use of cyberspace or computer resources. For example, a simple misinformation in the Internet, that there will be bomb attacks during the holidays can be considered as cyber terrorism. As well there are also hacking activities intended towards individuals, families, organized by groups within networks, tending to cause terror among people, demonstrate power, collecting appropriate information for ruining peoples' lives, robberies, blackmailing etc. Cyber extortion is a type of cyber terrorism in which a website, e-mail server, or computer system is subjected to repetitive rejection of service or other attacks by wicked hackers, who demand money in return for promising to stop the attacks. Fearing that such attacks may become the custom in future warfare among nation-states, the concept of cyberspace operations impacts and will be adapted by war fighting military commanders in the future me out of the domain. Perpetrators characteristically use a scattered denial-of-service attack. Also various other small or rare forms of crimes forms of crimes form a part of the various types of cyber crime....
