LINKING VS HELPING VERBS


CAUTION: Some linking and helping verbs look alike, so be mindful how it is used.

LINKING VERBS are used to connect subjects


to modifiers (adjectives,nouns,pronouns)

HELPING VERB are used to accompany main


verbs, often to form tenses of verbs.

LINKING VERBS
connect subjects to modifiers (adjectives,nouns,pronouns)

Anna is beautiful.(adjective) They are student.(noun) That car was theirs.(pronoun)

HELPING VERB
accompany main verbs, often to form tenses of verbs.

Glen will talk to you. They have given me enough. She has caused too much trouble. You do realize your mistakes, right? She is trying her best.

RULES FOR BETTER VERB USE


LINKING
1. MODAL VERBS:
Can/could, may/might, shall/should, Will/would

MAIN VERB BASE FORM

EXAMPLE
I can do it. I will survive. I shall return.

2. Do/does/did

BASE FORM

Does she know? Did you hear me? He did arrive on time. We dont care. The tribe has spoken. She has given up. I have tried many times.

EXAMPLE
She is singing.

He was bitten by a dog. That was written by him.

RULES AND MECHANICS 1. The class will be divided into 5 groups with 5 members each.
2. Groups will be given 15 minutes to come up with as many songs that apply the RULES FOR BETTER VERB USE. 3. The group should be able to sing in unison the line of the song that contains the application of the rule.

EX: I believe I can fly, I believe I can touch the sky. GAME PROPER A. The Facilitator will chose a category.Ex. : Modal Verbs B. Each group will take turns in singing their songs for the given category. C. If the group cannot sing in 5 seconds, theyre out. D. The last group standing, wins!
