Cheska Mafaye R. Tablang (2011-01290) Reaction Paper in IMU Nursing Journal Modestly Elevated Glucose Levels During Pregnancy Are Associated With a Higher Risk of Future Diabetes Among Women Without Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

After reading this journal, having a four-day duty in IMU, and caring for a patient who has Gestational Diabetes Mellitus, I learned so much about the disease, how it affects the patients pregnancy, and the possible complications that it can do. This study proved that women with a slight elevated blood glucose levels below the threshold for gestational diabetes mellitus had a higher risk for acquiring diabetes. The researchers did a retrospective cohort study in order to gather, analyze, and interpret the data that they needed in order to land to their conclusion. They compared the patients who had results with normal values from their oral glucose challenge test and oral glucose tolerance test with women who had abnormal values. Those with one abnormal value had a higher risk for acquiring diabetes later in life than those who had results with normal values. I realized that any woman can acquire Gestational Diabetes Mellitus during their pregnancy, especially those who are unable to take care of their health properly. As nurses, we should be able to teach our GDM clients properly regarding the disease process of GDM so they can fully understand their condition and comply more and better with their therapeutic regimen. We should also religiously take their blood glucose level to monitor their condition and to watch out for untoward signs and symptoms, and complications.
