ENGINEERING
Engineering is a lucrative area where maximum number of technocrats are
working and the possibility of getting a job in this area is still higher. In the wake
of new economic policy, the industrial sector is likely to grow rapidly. Industrial
growth, coupled with the ensuing invasion of multinational companies, is likely
to boost the existing demand for engineers from all disciplines. They apply
the theories and principles of science – physics, chemistry and mathematics
for finding economical solution to technical problems. One third of world’s
technocrats belongs to India. It reveals the large opportunities awaiting Indian
engineering.
Prospects
Not only engineers are in great demand for technical services; candidates with
technical expertise are in great demand for managerial functions too. An engineer
with management qualifications is expected to excel in discharge of his duties
as manager, particularly in construction, project and production management.
Of late, engineers have also been taking lion’s share in the administrative services
of the government. More than one third of the total selected candidates for
the civil services are engineers, as is evident from the trend in recent years.
Notwithstanding the above-mentioned opportunities, engineering graduates also
excel in self-employment. Be it a small industrial project, electronic business,
construction activity, mechanical venture or fabrication activity, engineers perform
extremely well in their own business ventures.
Admission
One of the most important aspects of career in engineering is the admission
to an engineering college or institute. Before selecting a college the lab and
library facilities, faculty and previous year’s campus selection should be taken
into consideration. To be eligible for admission for an engineering degree, the
aspiring candidates are essentially required to do extremely well in their 10+2
examination. Minimum required marks are 50 percent in most of the cases. In
some colleges, however, no such limit is prescribed. Some of the engineering
colleges/institutes also prescribe varying minimum and maximum age limits.

Admission To IITs
IITs are institutions of national importance set up through an act of Parliament.
These institutes are known for providing quality technological education and for
research in frontier areas. In addition to B.Tech degree MSc integrated courses in
pure and applied science and M.Tech integrated courses in a few disciplines are
also offered by some of these institutes.
The IITs at Kanpur, Kharagpur, Delhi, Bombay, Roorkee and Madras offer
four-year degree courses in civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics and
computer science. The institutes at Kanpur, Kharagpur, Bombay and Madras
also offer courses in aeronautical engineering. All these courses are also offered
by the Institute of Technology at Varanasi. These Institutes offer facilities of
higher engineering courses like M.E. and M.Tech. All these Institutes have their
entrance examination at all-India level. This test is known as Joint Entrance
Examination [JEE].
Placements
Since IITs are the premier institutes of India and abroad, placements are assured
in coveted posts. More than 60 percent of candidates qualified in Civil Service
examination are from IITs.

and Mathematics. Those candidates who expect to pass the 10+2 examination
upto September 30 are also eligible. The age-limit is 16 to 21 years which is
relaxable upto 26 years for the Scheduled Caste (SC)/Scheduled Tribe (ST)
candidates. The two-day written entrance test judges the candidates in Physics,
Chemistry and Mathematics. All the candidates are also required to undertake a
screening test. The screening test is multiple choice objective type and includes
the questions on Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Rest of the papers, which
are of three-hour duration, are descriptive in nature and are evaluated only after
a candidate qualifies the screening test.
Every Institute has usual reservation of 15 percent and 7.5 percent for SC and ST
candidates respectively. If any vacancies are not filled due to lack of appropriate
candidates those are left vacant. Every Institute also has two seats each for the
dependents of killed/disabled personnel of the armed forces/paramilitary forces
and one seat for physically handicapped persons. In addition several seats
are also filled by nomination from foreign countries and such candidates are
admitted on the recommendations of the Government of India, without the
entrance examination.
Pattern of Examination
The examination will consist of two papers, each of three hours duration. Paper
- 1 and Paper - 2 will each have three separate sections on Physics, Chemistry
and Mathematics. Both papers will be of objective type, designed to test
comprehension and analytical ability of candidates.
Aptitude tests for B.Arch and B.Des programmes will be conducted for those
candidates who qualify in JEE and are desirous of joining these programmes.
Syllabus for this examination is available on the websites of all IITs and will also
be given in the Information Brochure of JEE-2007.

Job profile
General translation
Excellent writing skills and strong vocabulary in two languages are essential
to be a translator. Translating can be a challenging task as many languages
Humanities - 1
156
may not share the same syntactical patterns. Some words and phrases may
not even have equivalents in the language they are being translated into.
Technical translation
Translation of contracts, reports and other business documents is becoming
a necessity with the entry of multinationals in India. Translators can expect to
earn between Rs.150 and Rs.300 per page of translation for Indian languages;
between Rs.300 and Rs.500 per page for common foreign languages such
as French or German and up to Rs.750 per page for Japanese or Arabic.
Interpretation
Unlike translation, an interpreter does not enjoy the advantages of consulting a
dictionary when help is most needed. Interpretation is done on the spot, therefore,
proficiency in the languages concerned must be very high. The translator must
be well informed on current affairs and willing to learn lots of technical jargon.
Transcription
Transcription - mainly legal and medical - is fast becoming a lucrative career for
language graduates. Medical transcription is the process of translating digitised
audio medical records into text form. Medical professionals rely on skilled medical
transcriptionists to transform spoken words into accurate text records. Familiarity
with medical jargon and adaptability to the American accent are essential pre
requisites. Salary at the entry level is around Rs 6000.
Teaching
With the world truly becoming a global village, the language teacher is currently
in great demand. Language teachers can work with regular schools, colleges or
specialised language schools. Preparation of teaching materials such as books
and educational CDs is also an option for experienced teachers. Remuneration
for language teachers working in educational institutions depends upon a variety
of factors such as educational qualification, individual skill and experience in the
field. Freelancers can expect a minimum of Rs.60 per hour for teaching Indian
languages and Rs 100 for foreign languages, including English.

Advertising
Who wouldn’t like to watch Sachin and Shahrukh in the Pepsi ad or Sunil and
Salman in the Thumps Up one? All those glittering and glamorous ads we watch
on T.V, magazines etc are the results of the hard work of a team of members who
apply their creativity and perception to bring out the best in a product.Advertising
is a career that means fun all through the day and handsome rewards for all the
fun you had.
The industry has developed to a large extent over the years, which led to
intense competition, and the work of the ad professional is a critical one. Today
Advertising is not just an art and science of communication but it is a serious
business of building brands.
Remuneration
For the hard work that is put in he is well rewarded. Generally, he may get
somewhere from Rs.5000 per month to Rs.14-16 lakhs per annum depending
on his experience and expertise.
A creative team has two primary functions.First is copywriting where the caption,
copy matter and other text based components are framed by a copywriter. He
uses his creativity and works on the requirement of the client. He is responsible
for making the ad look attractive and delivering the message to the point.
The art director supplements the work of a copy writer with his visuals and
graphical components. A perfect combination of both creative and art directors
makes the ad appealing. “This is a team work and usually the concept level
creativity emerges more from the team than from any individual. So as to ensure
better cohesiveness among the team members we usually let the same team
Humanities - 1
178
work together”, clarifies the Creative Director of a leading agency who also adds
that “both the copy writer as well as the art director have the chance to elevate
themselves to the level of a Creative Director to whom both the copy writer as well
as the art department would report.”
Client Servicing
The key function of this department is to win clients or ‘accounts’ as and when
time demands and to service the agency’s clients on a day to day basis. They act
as mediators between the other departments within the agency and the client.
Their work involves thorough understanding of the client’s requirements and his
product and guiding the agency to provide what the brand needs. After studying
the client’s requirements they prepare a gist of what is needed usually termed as
‘brief’ which influences the success of the ad.
Eligibility
A postgraduate degree in management has more or less become the norm and
for heavily technology oriented products and brands, a graduation in that stream
would come handy. The hierarchy moves from junior accounts executive to that
of accounts director.
Media Planning
The role of a media planner has widened with the wide exposure of channels,
newspapers and Internet portals. His job profile is to study numbers and make
estimates so that a statistical background would come handy.
Eligibility
A Master’s degree in media planning offered by MICA and usually an MBA is also
recommended.
Guide on Education
179
Opinion
With the client’s budget being what it is, a media planner can make or break a
brand. “However creative the ad be, there is no point if the ad does not reach the
specified target audience at the right frequency and time. Thus a media planner
makes significant contribution to the result of the ad”, argues a media-planning
manager.
Production
Execution of the ideas of the creative team is the main task of the production
department. They would have to co-ordinate with the printers, commercial
production houses, pre-press houses etc.
Work environment
An ad professional need not necessarily work in the agency; he may be employed
in a clients office. “Advertising is only a portion of what would get the results for any
brand thus it would be meaningless if there is no synergy between the advertising
efforts and the other marketing efforts. At the client’s end, a brand manager
in addition to being involved in the advertisements also has to co-ordinate the
other marketing efforts to get best results,” says Mr. Suganth Ponnaiya, Brand
Manager, G.M Pens International Ltd.

Education-Teaching
Teaching is a varied experience. It involves being with children and adults and
helping them to go through different courses and solving their problems. Many
persons have an inborn desire to become teachers and for them a career in
teaching is highly recommended. Contrary to popular belief, it is not a fallback
profession for those who fail in other careers, but a highly responsible one, in
which you can shape the minds of tomorrow.
The teaching profession has many fallacies about it. It is commonly believed that
anyone can teach, provided that he has a little knowledge of the subject. Nothing
could be away from the truth. Imparting knowledge to the pupils is just one thing
that a teacher should have among other qualities. A proficient teacher requires
the ability to communicate well, to draw the attention of young minds even in the
most boring subjects, to inspire the pupils and finally the ability to set an example
by word and deed. Above all, a teacher must have a great deal of patience. None
is blessed with all these qualities. Sometimes even the PhD holders and great
amount of knowledge often make bad teachers.
The rewards of being in teaching are also great. Financially, school teachers may
not be at the top of the rung, but in colleges and universities the UGC scales apply
and the total earning is a tidy sum. The best reward, however, comes from the
students in terms of respect. A society still respects its teachers even if one may
not hold a very important post as far as hierarchy of jobs go. The satisfaction on
seeing a pupil doing well is immeasurable. In rural areas, parents often express
their gratitude in remarkable ways. This satisfaction is all enough, even if avenues
of promotions are limited in this field.
Though most people get into teaching by accident, it is advised that if one
really wants to be a teacher, one should plan one’s career. There are three levels
through which one can get enrolled: school, college or university. Each level calls
for different expertise. If you love to be with children, school teaching would be
a good option but if you want to be with youngsters, it is better to look at the
college or university. Teaching is ideal for ladies because of their in-born qualities
as working hours are not stiff and it enables them to bring forth their families too.
Much of the work, such as correction of mistakes, can be done at home.
The important skills that a school teacher should possess are tremendous
patience and the ability to get into the mind of a child. Over crowded classrooms
deprive the facility to listen to the students individually. To overcome this problem
excellent schools limit the size of their classes. Often, one may be caught in the
race to complete the syllabus and the child may then be neglected. A teacher
should be well aware of the fact that apart from teaching it is his duty to mould
the character of pupils.
Humanities - 1
182
It has been said that teaching as a profession is often low-priced. People treat it
as a time pass and join it because there may not be anything else to do. This is
sad, because the profession is a noble one and requires more commitment than
is commonly believed. Of course, the committed teachers are often looked upon.
A person who takes short cuts will not be devoted to this profession.
Finally, good teachers are the key to any worthwhile educational reform. National
prosperity is linked with good educational system. For education to be wholesome,
emphasise must be placed equally on the development of a well-rounded personality
as on the honing of the learners’ innate intellect and aptitudes.
The present educational system of the country is listed under the following
categories: pre-school or nursery school, primary school, secondary school or
higher secondary school and college or university education. Each level needs
specific educational qualifications.
Personal Attributes
Qualities that make a good teacher are great enthusiasm for learning and
teaching, sense of fairplay, patience, self-discipline, right skills and organisational
ability.

B.Ed. Programme
B.Ed programmes are usually-one-year courses. The essential educational
qualification to get enrolled into the BEd course is usually a degree in the
concerned subject. But weightage will be given to the candidates having
higher qualification. Most of the Universities across the country offer the B.Ed
programme. Each University follows its own criteria of selection. In 1996 the
National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) had issued regulations for the
training of teachers. The guidelines of NCTE in this regard are that ‘Those who
are desirous of entering the teaching profession at school level should seek
admission only in a full time course with face to face class room instructions.
Correspondence/Distance education courses are meant for serving teachers
only’. The Universities in Kerala offer B.Ed Degree in English, Malayalam, Hindi,
Arabic, Sanskrit, Urdu, Mathematics, Physical Science, Natural Science, Social
Studies, Home Science, Commerce, Computer Science and Geography.

Lecturers/College Teachers
College and university teaching demand a different approach. After finishing M.A.
in a subject, one can become a specialist by doing M.Phil. or Ph.D. To become a
college lecturer, you will have to clear the NET exam conducted by the University
Grants Commission (UGC). One can then apply to colleges for a job. College
teaching is different but the challenges are equally great. For’ one the students are
older. They are in the age group of late-teens, an age associated with rebellion. A
teacher has to be really good to earn respect. The age is also a delicate one, as
a number of negative influences exist which work on young minds. The teacher
Guide on Education
201
has the responsibility not only of imparting knowledge but to prevent negative
influences from invading the young minds. In many cases, a teacher has to be a
friend, philosopher and guide to his wards. A great deal of sensitivity is needed
and a teacher often makes a difference in the life of a youngster. Lecturers in
arts, science, social sciences, commerce, education, physical education, foreign
language etc. require a good academic record with at least 55% or an equivalent
grade at Master’s degree level in the concerned subjects from a recognised
University, and National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by UGC or JRF by
CSIR.
Physical Education
A cherished dream of 100 crore people was ash in the last Olympics held at
Athens. We had to satisfy ourselves with a silver medal won by Rajya Vardhan
Singh Rathode. To fulfill our ambition to win a gold medal in Olympics, we have to
strive hard with confidence and enthusiasm. The world of sports is an interesting
career field for the trained person. It is categorised into many groups:

Chapter 9
Banking
As on March 31, 2000, there were 33 private banks and 43 foreign banks
operating in the country. The 27 public sector banks still hold the biggest share
of the banking business, accounting for about 83 percent of the total deposits
and 80.50 percent of the total advances.
While nationalised banks struggle with their baggage from our socialist past,
winds of change are sweeping other segments. Modern day banks are not mere
suppliers of money. They have become providers of a wide range of services.
Provided the government rectifies its policies, banks can provide a host of
services such as selling insurance, mutual funds and investment opportunities,
as in other countries. More dramatic are the developments in technology. Today,
traditional business models are being challenged. Customers can do all their
banking transactions while sitting at home. Banks are introducing Automatic
Teller Machine (ATM) cards and, lately, debit cards as well. This promises to
change the face of banking forever.
There is also a viewpoint that traditional banks may not survive in this century.
Banks and providers of other financial services, it is argued, stand between lenders
and borrowers. The Internet threatens to put these two groups directly in touch
with each other. Should this happen, will it not reduce the function of banks?
The Internet is thus a great force for “disintermediation”. Unlike other items of
manufacture, money can be stored and transmitted electronically, and once this
trend catches up, it may well lead to the “fourth disintermediation” in the banking
sector. The first was the growth of mutual funds and insurance policies which ate
into bank deposits, the second was the development of capital markets, and the
third was advances in technology. In many developed countries, Internet banks
have drawn away deposits from traditional banks. These could be early signs
of an upheaval that we may well witness in the present decade. Technological
advances may well make online storing and payments so secure that people
will turn to electronic banks. It will not be surprising if firms use the Internet for
raising finance as well, without the assistance of banks, in the future.

Acquiring a University Degree or Diploma in Banking would be an added
qualification for those who wish to opt this field.

Insurance
Insurance Sector
Insurance business has a positive correlation with economic development in an
economy. As an economy develops over the years, insurance sector starts making
inroads into the interiors of the system. Most of the times, insurance begins with
the life insurance and gradually spreads to the field of general insurance. Every
forward looking person would invariably have his/her life insurance done. Even in
a country like India, it is hard to believe that any adult person living in towns would
not have life insurance done and the concept is picking up even in the rural areas.
In other words, the life insurance market in India is as large as its population.
Guide on Education
237
Expanding Horizons
During the past several years, the business of life insurance has flourished so
much that the insurance business is being considered to be one of the most
rapidly developing area in the financial sector. Keeping the large potential of
growth of this sector in mind, the Government set up a special committee,
known as Malhotra Committee, to recommend reforms in insurance sector to
enable it to meet the challenge of globalisation. Most of the recommendations
of the Committee have not yet been implemented but the time is not far when
majority of the recommendations would be given effect.
Just like banks, the branches of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) have
now reached most parts of the country. The physical absence of its branches
has been overcome by the presence of a large network of its agents. LIC agents
have spread even to the remote villages today. The expanding sector offers
challenging and remunerative jobs, with several attractive benefits linked with good
achievements in terms of business. The promotion and personal development
benefits are plenty and a hard-working candidate can hope to go quite high up in
the ladder of promotion. With the entry of private business groups into the field
of insurance round the corner, the opportunities offered by the insurance sector
are going to increase manifold.
Eligibility: Examination for AAOs in GIC and LIC are conducted separately, generally
every year by both the corporations. Every graduate/post graduate in any discipline
including Arts, Science, Commerce, Engineering or law with 50 per cent marks is
eligible to take this examination. The Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe
(ST) candidates are eligible with 40 per cent marks. A candidate is required to
have qualifying marks either in the graduate or post graduate examination. The
candidates must be more than 21 years of age and the upper age limit is 28 years.
Relaxation in the upper age limit is available to the concerned categories as per
rules. Reservation of vacancies to the SC, ST, OBC (Other Backward Classes)
and ECO/SSRCO (Emergency Commissioned Officers/Short Service Retrenched
All the candidates who qualify the written examination are called for the personal
interview. The personal interview is aimed at judging the suitability of the candidates
for the post of AAOs. Selection is made on the basis of overall performance of
the candidates in the written test and interview. The selected candidates, after the
prescribed training, are absorbed as AAOs in the pay scale of Rs 2100-4260. (The
pay scale is due for revision w.e.f. 1993 following the recent settlement).
Other Posts
In addition to the AAOs, both the Insurance Companies recruit other categories
of employees by way of direct recruitment. For example, Chartered Accountants
are recruited directly as AAOs in the LIC without written examination. Similarly,
GIC recruits Assistants through a competitive examination called Assistants’
Examination and LIC conducts clerical Assistants’ Examination for recruitment
to these posts. The minimum qualification for these two exams is Matriculation
with 60 per cent marks and the written examination also consists of objective
type tests of Reasoning, Numerical Ability, Clerical Aptitude, English Language
Guide on Education
239
and General Knowledge. In addition, descriptive test for Essay, Letter and Precis
writing is also held. The standard of this competitive examination is lower than
that for the AAOs. Age relaxations and reservation of vacancies is also as per the
rules. The candidates who qualify the written test are then interviewed and the
combined merit is considered while making the final selection. It is, however,
pertinent to add that the minimum age required is 18 years and the upper age
limit is 25 to 26 years.
How to Prepare
Every competitive examination requires systematic and prolonged preparations.
Even to get into any of the jobs offered by the insurance sector, the candidates
have to prepare hard. The examination aims at judging the knowledge as well
as speed of the candidates, particularly in the objective type paper. At the same
time, the descriptive test judges the analytical ability, depth of knowledge,
expression and understanding of the languages and needs different type of
preparations. The objective tests require knowledge and speed to solve the
problems correctly and thorough practice. GK and current affairs need special
knowledge of these subjects and cannot be mastered in a short period of time.
It is a long-term process and the aspiring candidates have to begin early. A good
book on the basics of General Knowledge, supported by reading a good national
newspaper and competitive magazine can greatly assist a candidate to do well in
this part. For mastering the reasoning, numerical ability and English language,
special efforts are required to solve the objective type questions correctly. The
Competition Master is an ideal magazine to prepare for the objective type tests,
supported by a standard GK-book like “General Knowledge Refresher” by O.P.
Khanna, published by Khanna Brothers (Publishers) Chandigarh. Other books
like ‘Test of Reasoning’, ‘Current Affairs and Backgrounders’, ‘Topical Essays’,
‘How to Study and Take Exams’ etc are some other books which can immensely
assist the aspiring candidates. A standard grammar and comprehension book for
the descriptive tests is of good help.
For the objective tests, in addition to the knowledge, practice is also very important.
More particularly for the Reasoning and Numerical Ability tests practice pays rich
dividends. It not only enables a candidate to solve the problems correctly by
indicating the methods to be used but also by achieving the required speed to
solve the questions correctly. Regular practice also generates a lot of confidence
in the mind of the candidate to attempt the paper. The descriptive questions, on
the other hand, need more of knowledge and analytical input. In-depth knowledge
and correct expression are two important ingredients of essay writing. In addition,
style of writing also determines the marks to be obtained by the candidates.
Similarly, precis writing is an art unto itself and needs to be mastered. It is not
just summary but an attempt towards precision in own language, without losing
sight of the content and its meaning. A good understanding, rich vocabulary
and regular practice usually helps a candidate to do well in Essay and Precis. A
candidate who is fully prepared as per the above guidelines can hope to score
over other candidates and do well in the competition.
The preparations for the personal interview also have to be elaborate, particularly
for the post of AAO. All those who qualify the written test are usually a cut above the
rest of the candidates and offer tough competition. Hence, an aspiring candidate
has to do well both in the written examination as well as the personal interview.
Normally, not much of difference in the written score is there and it is the personal
interview which finally determines the selection or otherwise of a candidate. A
candidate, therefore, must be well versed with the General Knowledge, and current
affairs and should be able to discuss and analyse the topic of current importance
and general interest. In addition to reading good newspapers, magazines and
other books, the candidate should also have a good understanding, assimilation
and expression. Any knowledge is useless if the candidate is unable to express
himself/herself while replying to any question. While brushing up of knowledge is
essential before the personal interview, more important is the capability to express
clearly. The candidate should also identify strong and weak points and should be
able to guide the direction of the interview away from the weak points towards the
strengths. If the preparation is made as per the guidelines and the candidates put in
the required hard work, there is no reason why the candidate should not succeed.
The art of interviewing forms the very basis of the utmost input requirement, in
the form of humans, of organisations. The process constitutes an important part
of the recruitment procedure.
The Interview Board, in the allotted time, has to bring out the best and the worst in the
candidates and then arrive at conclusions, most subjectively, on a common-sense
basis, since assessing a candidate on each and every attribute infallibly is neither
possible nor feasible for the interviewers; rather there are chances of faltering.
To find the ideal candidate for any post is not possible, nor it is easy to define
the concept completely in the context of the metamorphosing managerial and
administrative values. The best course left to the Board is, therefore, to pick
Guide on Education
241
the best of the available candidates; to obviate repetition of the entire gamut of
the selection procedure. This holds good, more often than not, in the case of
selections for senior positions.
Often for the purpose, the Board evolves a check-list, an exhaustive but practical
one, whereunder ratings are accorded for different personality traits. Experience
has shown that this strategy works quite satisfactorily in all types of interviews.
The undermentioned can be the tentative parameters for the Board to look for its
picks; not necessarily in the same order or weightage, for they may vary from post
to post and from organisation to organisation, depending upon their needs.
The candidate, prima facie, ought to have the needed potential and keenness
for the purpose of being developed into a better one, in the near future, and
on, to impart benefits to the organisation, for it spends its resources on the new
incumbent with an eye for good returns.
Self-acceptance of the past failures, if any, by the candidate will prove an asset,
a qualification. It will speak of his frankness and will inculcate value ethics in
management compelling need of the hour the world over.
The candidate should be able to ‘look within’ as Christ has said, in the face of
taking decisions, especially when confronting with hard situations. He must have
a clear vision of himself and of the assignments required to be accomplished. As
a matter-of-fact, his performance itself is a perennial source of inspiration to him;
a source of fulfilment and pleasure; and a robust antidote to (counter) the stress,
both in his personal and official life.
And over zealousness in conduct may also jeopardise the chances of being
selected. If not checked, temperament can always sway away one’s decisions to
an unwanted level of human relations, which may turn out to be a point of no-
return. On part of the candidate, the deepest mental posture, even if provoked
during the course of interview by the Board members, is sure to carry the day.
This will help him give balanced answers to the satisfaction of the interviewers.
The interviewers end up, with the best available of the lot: the near-ideal, but not
the ideal.

intense interplay of demand and supply forces which have increased the volume
of activity in these markets. Investors entrust their funds to mutual funds with
trained and experienced portfolio managers. A portfolio manager’s job is very
