Section A

1. In the figure, OABC is a tetrahedron with OA = 1, ∠BOC = 60° , ∠ABO = ∠ACO = 30°
and ∠AOB = ∠AOC = 90°. M is the mid-point of BC.

(a) Find BC.

(b) Find, correct to the nearest degree, the angle between the planes ABC and OBC.

2. In the figure, PQRS is a tetrahedron such that PR = 1, QR = 5, RS = 3, ∠QRS = 120° and

∠QPR = ∠SPR = 90°.

(a) Find QS.

(b) Find, correct to the nearest degree, the angle between the planes PQR and PRS.

3. In the figure, OABC is a pyramid such that OA = 3, OB = 5 , OB = 11 ,
∠AOC = 60° and ∠AOC = ∠OBC = 90°.

(a) Find AC.

(b) A student says that the angle between the planes OBC and ABC can be represented by
∠OBA. Determine whether the student is correct or not.

4. In the figure, a hillside ABEF is a rectangular plane sloping at 20° to the horizontal. A path
BF on the hillside makes an angle 48° with the line of greatest slope. Find, correct to the
nearest 0.1 degree,

(a) the angle that the path BF makes with the horizontal,
(b) the angle between the planes BDF and ADF.

5. Figure 1 shows a triangular cardboard ADG where DG = h m. C is a point on DG such that

∠CAG = θ . B is a point on the line AC such that AB = x m, ∠DAB = α and ∠DBC = β .

(b) Suppose h = 20, x = 40, α = 8° and β = 30° .

(i) Find θ.
(ii) The cardboard ADG is placed on a horizontal table and then ∆ADC is folded
along AC until the plane ADC and the table are perpendicular to each other as
shown in Figure 2. Find the height of point D above the table, correct to 3
significant figures.
