ESSAY WRITING

Points to remember
1. Sentences should be grammatically correct
2. Sentences should be clear in meaning, so that thoughts are expressed clearly
without confusion.
eg. My father only went today to office by car early, (incorrect - confusion)
My father went early to office today, by car. (correct)
3. Ideas or points must be written in paragraphs and each paragraph must have an
introductory sentence, which gives the main idea. The rest of the paragraph should
be an expansion on the idea.
4. The essay or composition must be divided into three main titles or sections -
namely
1. Introduction
This can be compared to the foundation of a house. The introductory paragraph
should be the attraction to the reader, to continue reading the rest of the essay.
2. Body
The body of an essay must have connected ideas or thoughts in paragraph form. Each
paragraph should have a key sentence which is expanded, in good language. The
length of an essay depends on this part of the essay. The body of an essay should
contain all the ideas in an organized presentation of fact followed by fact.
3. Conclusion (Roof)
This should be the finale. It should be a summing up. The essay could be ended
with a note of opinion, judgment, acceptance etc. A little anecdote, a line of a
poem, a simile or metaphor could be used depending on the topic. This too should
be in paragraph form.
5. The choice of vocabulary will make the composition richer. Each new paragraph
must be connected to the former. Connectors such as however, therefore, thus, as a
result of, although, due to the fact, etc, could be used.
6. Sentences must vary in length and so also should be paragraphs.
7. Essay writing must be done in legible writing and should be well punctuated.
8. Essays should be read over and mistakes corrected.
