Chemistry: Course Guide At-a-Glance

Quarter One Unit 1: Whats the Matter? Properties of Matter An understanding of matter and its different forms is a fundamental concept in Chemistry. Students will investigate the physical and chemical properties of matter. Specifically students will focus on the transformation of matter using energy in the form of heat and represent this change in graphical form. Unit 2: Bullseye: Accuracy and Lab Safety Students will investigate the skills and equipment necessary to maintain safety in a high school Chemistry laboratory. Additionally students will acquire the mathematical skills needed to analyze data collected in the laboratory. These skills will focus on maintaining the accuracy and precision of measurements during calculations. Unit 3: Build Me Up, Scotti: Atoms Students will investigate the periodic table of elements on the atomic and subatomic level. This will include research into the scientific history of the atom and the scientific evidence that led to our current understanding of the atom. Students will also explore radioactivity in the world around them and calculate the half-life of radioactive particles. Quarter Two Unit 4: We Are Family: The Periodic Table, Trends and Electron Configuration Students will discover how scientists use groups and periods on the periodic table to predict the physical and chemical properties of elements. Students will compare and contrast atoms, ions and isotopes using periodic trends in size, ionization energy and electronegativity. Additionally, students will use electron configurations to describe the number and location of electrons around the nucleus of an atom. Unit 5: Let Ions Be Ions: Ionic Bonding and Compounds In this unit, students will write chemical symbols, formulas and equations using universally accepted guidelines (IUPAC) and explain the behavior of ionic compounds in terms of interactions at the particle level. They will explore and predict the formulas of various ionic compounds. Unit 6: Sharing is Caring: Covalent Bonding and Compounds In this unit, students will write chemical symbols, formulas and equations using IUPAC guidelines and explain the behavior of covalent compounds in terms of interactions at the particle level. They will explore and predict the symbols of various molecules. Quarter Three

Unit 7: Holey Moley: Moles and Formulas In this unit, students will relate measurable quantities using molar relationships and use proportional reasoning to determine mole ratios. They will use this information to solve problems requiring them to apply this information. Unit 8: Balancing Act: Balancing and Classifying Chemical Reactions In this unit, students will explain how the Law of Multiple Proportions applies to chemical reactions and give an example of how mass, energy, or moles are conserved in a chemical reaction. Unit 9: Stoichi What?? Stoichiometry: Mole Calculations in Chemical Equations In this unit, students will relate measurable quantities using molar relationships, compare and contrast chemical reactions using percent yield and percent error, and explain why mole ratios are central to solving stoichiometry problems. Quarter Four Unit 10: Full of Hot Air: Gases and Kinetic Molecular Theory In this unit, students will describe the law of conservation of energy. Describe the Kinetic Molecular Theory (KMT). They will also use KMT to explain how temperature, pressure, and volume can cause a state change. They will understand that scientists develop laws and theories based on observations and inferences and use the gas laws to describe how pressure, temperature, and volume of a gas are related

Unit 11: If Youre Not Part of the Solution, Youre Part of the Precipitate: Solutions and Acid Base Equilibrium In this unit, students will explain how particles interact at the molecular level to form solutions. They will describe the role of ion concentration in neutralization reactions. They will also describe how temperature, pressure and concentration affect solutions.

Unit 12: CHCHCHCHemistry- It Takes Alkynes to Make a World: Organic Chemistry In this unit, students will describe how hydrocarbons are involved in chemical reactions and the unique properties of carbon.
