Intro A: Attention Getter: Have you ever wondered what people are saying when they are talking with their hands? (In sign language, and spoken) B: Significance Statement: According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, there could be anywhere between 5 million to 40 million deaf people in the world. C: Thesis Statement: The purpose of my speech is to inform my audience of the history and use of American Sign Language. II. When it was created A: Why was it created? For early man to communicate B: Where was it created? No one knows for sure where. III. Main Point #2 who created it? People credit Abbe Charles Michel de LEpee with creating French Sign Language because he started the 1st free public school for the deaf in Paris, 1771. Laurent Clerc & Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet invented ASL. A: How they created it: B: Why they created it: Organized deaf education was non-existent until 1750 when de LEpee (French Catholic Priest) founded the National Institute for Deaf-Mutes. Defies came from all around to attend. They brought signs that they had used at home and taught them to LEpee, where he utilized the signs he had learned to teach his students French. IV. Main Point #3 Modern Sign Language A: Who uses it? Deaf people around the world use sign language. Different Sign Languages are used around the world have come about b/c of the necessity for the language. B: How and where do they learn? V. Conclusion

A: Restatement of Thesis: The purpose of my speech was to inform my audience of the history and use of American Sign Language. B: Review of Main Points: It has been used since the beginning of mankind, but about 200 years ago, people started creating a more sophisticated version. In todays world, it is very possible for a deaf person to succeed. C: Clincher: If you are trying to reach masses of people in this world, you must do it by a sign language. Whether your vehicle is commerce, literature, or politics, you can do nothing but raise signals, and make motions to the people.
