HJHS CTE INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS & BASIC COMPUTER REPAIR

COURSE SYLLABUS

A. DESCRIPTION This is one of the Career Technical Education (CTE) Courses. This course reviews and applies the basic uses of various computer applications that are commonly used in everyday tasks. Emphases are on basic functions or uses of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, also creating, designing and updating a website and Windows Live Moviemaker. However, it also meets the needs of many students other interests as needed and a course that provides students with a general feel for the subject of computer application. B. ORGANIZATION: This is a lecture & activity-lab course in which topics are presented by the instructor, hands-on activities are explained via demonstrations, and assigned projects are completed by students both during class and outside of class when needed. Projects and activities will be approached in various settings such as whole group, small groups, pairs, and individual. This Intro to Computers course assumes little previous computer experience or training, so the initial emphasis is safety, the uses of equipment and basic procedures. C. COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. To introduce students to the use of computers in a general sense. 2. To introduce the major parts of the computer that allows it to function. 3. To introduce students to the various types of applications commonly used today. 4. To introduce students to the importance of storing and saving of files saved in the computer. 5. To provide students with opportunities to develop basic computer skills in respect to everyday demands in word processing and graphical presentations. 6. To be able to update a website. 7. To be able to keep a digital working folder of activities and assignments up to date as a portfolio (a folder which provides an overview of assignments completed/started). This will be stored on student computers and backed up via network in the instructors computer. Page 1 of 5

8. To be able to work in a group. 9. To be able to critique a peers work. 10. To be able to write an essay.

D. COURSE TOPICS: This course will cover the following topics: 1. Equipment and basic computer procedures and troubleshooting. 2. File saving examples, creating contact sheet for beginning of course. 3. Networking 4. Installing software 5. Basic Keyboarding 6. Photo editing via freeware 7. Web searching 8. Virus protection 9. Creating files and saving; save/save as. 10. Creating a few PowerPoint presentations. 11. Designing, creating and updating a website 12. Creating, naming and saving a worksheet in Microsoft Excel, averaging, sum, formatting, etc. 13. Emphasis on dos and donts of plagiarizing, copy and pasting, cutting and pasting, and converting files. 14. Easy, yet, efficient shortcuts in Microsoft applications. 15. Basic computer repair/troubleshooting.

E. REQUIRED SUPPLIES: 1. Pencil/pen 2. 1in. binder 3. Filler paper 4. Optional: flash drive minimum 4gb

F. GRADING PLAN: Coursework will be weighted as follows: PSS weight frequency 1. Final Exam 15-25% 2. class work 10-20% 3. quizzes/tests 20-40% 4. Special Project 10-20%
