Basic Studies: Catastrophic Events: Students will assess geologic and atmospheric patterns on Earth related to storms, earthquakes, volcanoes and other catastrophic events. Concepts studied are local and global heating, convection currents, water cycle, cloud formation, air pressure, plate tectonics, the movement of magma and lava, and viscosity of liquids. Diversity of Life: The study progresses from macroscopic to microscopic observations; to discover the fundamental unit of life, the cell. Students will then investigate organism subsystems and behaviors, and consider their adaptive advantages for reproduction and survival. Concepts: cells, tissues, organisms, structures, functions, behaviors, adaptations, systems and interactions. Course Outcomes: Use the scientific method as a tool for scientific investigations. Keep a science notebook to: o Make scientific observations. o Record and analyze data. o Prepare charts and graphs using collective data. o Organize handouts. Complete labs to investigate specific scientific phenomena. Learn to use specialized scientific equipment. Target specific state benchmarks that will enable students to successfully master the state science MSP. Instruction will include: Class activities: reading, discussion, hands-on activities, note taking Labs (Science Safety Contract is required and will be followed). Computer Labs (Computer Use Agreement is required). TIPS Teachers involve parents in science Assessments/quizzes you will be expected to pass with a C or higher. Grading Policy: All class work, projects, labs, and homework must be turned in on time. Work that is turned in late will not earn full credit. Grades will be based on scores from: Classwork, Labs, Science Notebook, Participation 30% Assessments, Quizzes, and Projects 70%
Letter grades will be determined using a standard percentage scale as follows: 93-100% A 90-92% A87-89% B+ 83-86% B 80-82% B77-79% C+ 73-76% C 70-72% C67-69% D+ 63-66% D 0-62% F

Students and Parents/Guardians will be able to view grades continuously throughout the year via the internet using the Skyward program.

Classwork: Each days assignment will be posted for students to write in their agenda. This is a requirement. It is each students responsibility to obtain make-up work and ask questions they may have. Absence Policy: If you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to go to the missing work folder files. Find your period and your missing work will be located in the file. If you need help with the work see me before or after school. Missing or Late Assignments: You will be expected to do all work as they prepare you for the assessments. Discipline Policy: Each student is expected to: *Come to class every day prepared with materials, a positive attitude, and be ready to learn. *Behave in a respectful, responsible, and cooperative manner. *Listen attentively and contribute to class discussions. Disruptive or inappropriate behavior will be handled according to the student handbook: warning, time-out, phone call home and/or removal from class. Electronics Policy: Cameras, MP3 type music devices, electronic readers, headphones, or any other electronic devices are not to be at school. Phones may be brought to school but MUST be kept in locker. Phones that are used in class, or seen in class, seen during passing time and/or at lunch, or, elsewhere in the building will be confiscated and held in the office until the end of the day. Students will need to stop by the office and pick up. Multiple offenses of this policy will result in a parent conference and possible disciplinary action. Educational acceptance can be made in advance, at my discretion. This discretion does not transfer to other classes. After the exception has been made, the device must go back to the students locker. **Texting and social media are prohibited. Texting/SM will result in progressive consequences. **

You can subscribe for text, e-mail, or both. ~Text is as simple as the text screen on the right. ~When you send the e-mail you will receive a confirmation e-mail where you need to click the link. No information needs to be entered it is as simple as clicking the link and you are confirmed.
