with the patient sitting


Examine the posterior thorax & lungs The patients arms should be folded across the chest with hands resting, if possible,on the opposite shoulders.

2. With the patient supine


examine the anterior thorax and lungs.

Always inspect the patient for any signs of respiratory difficulty.


Asses the patients color for cyanosis Listen to the patients breathing audible wheezing or stridor Inspect the neck M.sternomastoid. et al, supraclavicula retraction, and position of trachea Observe the shape of the chest (diameter AP)
