STUDENT -AdamElford PARTNER TEACHER Michael Maher

SCHOOL Valley Creek Middle School FIELD INSTRUCTOR Colleen Whidden

The purpose of this three-week field experience is to focus on the complex dimensions of individual learners in classrooms. The student's field journal and his/her participation in the field experience should provide evidence of an ability to act thoughtfully in the classroom and within the school community, a deepening understanding of individual learners, and an emerging ability to plan for, participate in, and assess students' learning. The Narrative Assessment should also address the particular ways the student worked with individual and small groups of students and should include the student teacher's key learnings, key dispositions and the KSA's relevant to the specific context of the field experience. The following report on the student's work is organized in relation to the questions: "Where is the work particularly strong?" "What could the student do to further his/her professional development?"

Adam has had an outstanding start to his journey in becoming a teacher. Adam has had a unique, and somewhat challenging, field experience. Adam's original assignment was for a secondary Mathematics and Science. However, when he arrived, he found the assignment to be Mathematics, Science m grade 7 and Physical Education in grades 4-9. He persevered and overcame this initial obstacle. Adam also became an important member of an extracurricular program that I run called Conditioning. He participated in multiple Conditioning training days that began well before class time. The purpose of this experience was for Adam to engage and develop a relationship with a group of individual learners. To this end, Adam has worked collaboratively to develop his vision of what an ideal lesson would look like to the indiviudal learner. He has been thoughtful, understanding and highly motivated to improve and develop his practice. Adam created a series of lessons in Mathematics, Science and Physical Education that were geared towards the individual learner. In Mathematics this developed within the Geometry Unit and involved students work with Area, Perimeter and Circumference of various shapes. Adam created a series of lessons and assignments directed towards his unique learners. In Science this developed within the Heat and Temperature Unit and involved students work with key concepts within the unit. Adam created a game show information session for the students. In Physical Education, Adam used his background in Track and Field to further develop small groups in their skills sets as well as organize full class dynamic warm ups.

Adam's work is particularly strong in his "soft skills" with the students. He rapidly creates a rapport with the students types of learners and how they create the classroom "tapestry". Adam has a gentle disposition and a genuine way in which he conducts himself in a way that has endeared him to his students. Adam's continued work should focus on continuiag to see the students as the unique and capable individuals that they are, while understanding and addressing their needs within the classroom. It is with great enthusiasm that I recommend Adam for credit within this field experience.
