Rules of Play The game of Rugby is played over 80 minutes, split into 40 minute halves. Each team has 15 players who assume various positions, which play critical parts in the teams play. The ball can be moved by carried it in the hands, or kicking at any time during play, but under no circumstances can the ball be passed or made to go forward by the ball carried other than by kicking the ball with the foot or shin. If the ball is hit or passed forward without it being kicked, it is called a knock-on and is a penalty, which results in a scrum to the opposition. The aim of a team is to score as many points against your opponents while conceding none. Points area scored by the following methods; Tries - A try is worth 5 points and is scored by a player touching the ball down into the opponents try area. Tries can also be awarded as Penalty Tries where an attacking player was illegally blocked by the defending team, and a pushover try when an attacking pack, push the scrum over the opposition try line. Conversion A conversion is awarded when a try is scored and allowing the attacking team to gain 2 more points by kicking the ball over the posts of the Rugby goal. The conversion is usually taken from the line in the field where the try was scored. Penalty A penalty kick scores 3 points and is awarded if a serious foul has been committed. Drop-Goal A drop goal scores 3 points and is a kick at goal during the run of play, where the ball is kicked just after touching the ground. These are usually scored by fly-halves.

THE POISTIONS

Within Rugby there are 15 players who take to the pitch, they will either fall into the two following categories; forward of backs. Forwards There are 8 forwards who form the scrum. These are the guys that get stuck in and primarily are there to defend their territory and win any scrums, ruck and mauls. They can usually be identified by their cauliflower ears, flat noses and missing teeth. Backs In contrast to the forwards, the back are the players with speed and flair. These are the players who control the running game, and amongst this motley crew will your try scorers. Both the backs and forwards are joined together by the scrum half and fly half, who act as the tacticians of the game. Theses two positions control the flow of play between the pack (forwards) and the backs. 1 Loosehead Prop Usually stockiest player on the pitch essential to winning scrums and line-outs. 2 Hooker A front row forward getting stuck in, but essential to winning scrums, as his job is to hook the ball out to the scrum-half and is positioned between the two props. 3 Tighthead Prop with the Loosehead prop will support the hooker in the front row. Similar to his prop colleague another key function is to scare opponents.

Penalties Failing to release the ball after being tackled, or the tackling player failing to release the tackled player or doing a dangerous tackle on the other player. Entering a ruck or maul from the side. Leaving one's feet in the ruck. Deliberately collapsing a scrum or illegally collapsing a maul (see ELV). Scrum infringements: not binding properly on an opponent (for prop forwards) or a team-mate (for other players); leaving the scrum before the ball has emerged from it; not pushing straight against the opposing pack. Being offside and not making an effort to move to an onside position. Tackling infringements: a high tackle (where contact is made above the shoulders); tackling a player in the air or a player holding a team-mate off the ground; or tackling without trying to grasp the ball-carrier and bring him to ground (e.g. a shoulder charge or push). Violent or foul play: punching, elbowing, kicking, head-butting, tripping and so forth. Throwing or knocking the ball forwards, or out of play in any direction. Tackling or holding an opponent who is not in possession of the ball. Obstructing an opponent from tackling the ball-carrier (crossing). Not retreating ten metres at a penalty. Contesting or dissenting from a referee's decision, or using abusive language or conduct towards any match official. Any other action the referee considers to be "contrary to good sportsmanship" (such as throwing the ball away while play is stopped in order to prevent a prompt restart, especially if time is close to expiring). The side that is awarded the penalty restarts the game with a kick or scrum at their discretion. If a kick is taken, the side that the penalty was awarded against must retreat 10 metres (or to their goal line if closer). There are four ways of restarting the game; A tap penalty, often taken quickly to exploit lack of organization in the opposition's retreating defense, is where a player drops the ball onto his foot and kicks it up into his arms and then carries the ball forward. A kick to touch. The side with the penalty gets the throw-in to the resultant lineout, from which they have a good chance of securing possession. This is used mainly to gain territory though it is also used as a tactic to gain a platform for a rolling maul near the opponent's try line and muscle over for a score. A kick at goal. The kick at goal is the primary method of scoring points in rugby union and is usually taken off the ground from a sand or plastic tee (though it is possible to drop kick the ball). If it is successful, they score three points, and the opposition re-start from the centre line. (In rugby sevens, the scoring team restarts from the centre line.) If the penalty is missed but the ball remains in play, play continues. If the penalty is missed and the ball goes dead a 22 metre drop-out is awarded to the opposition. A scrum. A team may opt to have a scrum. This would normally be taken if an attacking team wished to have all the defensive forwards tied up in one place allowing the backs the luxury of a one on one confrontation. Alternatively, if a team has ascendancy in the scrums they may try for a pushover try, which may result in the award of a penalty try if the scrums are deliberately collapsed by the defending side.
