Special Areas Brief 2013-2014 Coosa Elementary General Music Overview

Teaching music is not my main purpose. I want to make good citizens. If children hear fine music from the day of their birth and learn to play it, they develop sensitivity, discipline and endurance. They get a beautiful heart. Shinichi Suzuki Personal Teaching Philosophy (abbreviated): to develop comprehensive young musicians who are fluent in the language of music by means of both instrumental and choral music pedagogy based on a well-rounded general music curriculum which is presented to students by means of creative, varied, hands-on experience-based learning activities to further develop and nurture a life-long thirst for learning and love of music (fine arts). Unit Objectives: Performance/rehearsal etiquette ( The Leader in Me) 4 (or 5) instrument families 6 genres of music (including emphasis on regional musical heritage) Vocal and instrumental playing technique Eight major composers (2 from each period of music history) Literacy (rhythm and sight-reading) Proficiency/understanding of all elements of music (harmony, melody, rhythm, form, and expressive qualities) Album for the Young (Robert Schumann) Peter and the Wolf (Sergei Prokofiev)

Performances: Holiday (winter program): December 12* Spring Concert: May 23* Various school and community performances (PTA, community clubs, etc.) TBA *= awaiting confirmation

Miscellaneous: 2 field trips (one per semester) i.e. symphony or musical theater production Guest musicians Community outreach School alma mater Arts infusion to reinforce core concepts (collaboration with classroom teachers)

Major Works: The Four Seasons (Antonio Vivaldi) The Well-tempered Clavier (Johann Sebastian Bach) The Carnival of the Animals (Camille Saint-Sans) The Nutcracker (Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky)
