Rethinking: You are the Light of the World

awazieikechi.com /rethinking-you-are-the-light-of -the-world/

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matt 5:1416

If you have not read the last post, I suggest you go straight to it here. In the last post, I talked about Jesus and how he became a light to the world. The things he did though insignificant to his kindred at that time had a profound effect in time to come. I am guessing that many of you after reading the last post, and currently reading this post , will be asking how does this affect us or probably you are still trying to figure out everything. Well take a coffee and relax as I finish up. Jesus while doing what he loves dong best (Teaching), makes a statement to his kindred. He tells them that they are a light to the world. Thats easy to understand so the people thought. From the time of Abraham to Jesus, they were told that they were a chosen race, Gods own people and they carried this in their heart for a long time. However, Jesus is telling them to let their light shine. What does He actually mean? Looking at verse 15 gives us a clue. Why would you want to hide your lamp under a bowl? That hilarious!! Unfortunately, a lot of people today hide their lamps under the bowl. There is a shining light in every man which should be a source of light for others. Instead of putting our lamps on a stand for others to see, people do either one or more of these three things: 1. Wait for others to shine theirs 2. Complain that no one is giving them light 3. Give an excuse why they cannot give light to others Why do people do this? Is it because we are born that way? Unlikely, as we have records of great men who were not born great. Is it our genes or DNA? There are numerous answers but one thing I can point to, is our perception of what it means to shine. We sometimes despise small beginnings. Most people have big dreams that could change the world but they fail to take little steps. We have others instead taking small steps look for someone who can make them leap a great length. You dont have to be the president to change the world. You dont have to be at the top to make an impact in your community. Start where you are now; use your gifts to help people around your neighborhood. Make a friend smile and try to be there for your loved ones and thereby you are giving light to others. As you give light to others, others do the same and then you reach the world
