5th/6th Wellness Syllabus

Description: Wellness is the quality or state of being healthy in body and mind, especially as the result of deliberate effort (Dictionary.com). Many of the habits formed in adolescence carry with us into adulthood. This class provides 5th and 6th graders with the opportunity to form healthy habits by gaining awareness of the many social, emotional, and physical challenges that adolescents face, and learning the tools necessary for dealing with pressures and making healthy decisions. Teachers: Ms. Larrow (School Counselor), Mondays and Tuesdays Mr. Hathaway (SAP Counselor), Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays

Topics to be Covered: o o o o o o o Self-Image Healthy decision making Substance abuse prevention Media awareness Coping skills and anger management Communication and social skills Conflict resolution

Class Expectations:
Respect self and others, Respect your environment, Be Responsible for Learning, Be Safe (R2B2) Arrive on time and prepared. If more than 5 minutes late unexcused, a green sheet may be written and it will negatively affect your citizenship grade for that day. Make up missed work. If you are absent for any reason, you are still expected to turn in a completed workbook at the end of the term. It is your responsibility to talk to the teacher about what you missed and getting help if you fall behind. Wellness class sometimes focuses on sensitive and personal issues. You must work to listen to one another, maintain a respectful attitude and open mind, and keep judgments to yourselves. You will gain a lot more from topics discussed if everyone feels comfortable to express themselves. You are generally expected to use the bathroom and water fountain before and after Wellness class. Discipline procedure: Minor misbehavior after one or more warnings will result in a break. If more than one break is given, student may receive a green sheet or detention after school to make up for lost learning time.

Pencils. You are expected to come prepared to class. If you do not have a writing utensil, a point will be deducted from your daily citizenship grade. Wellness class can involve a lot of self-reflection. The more work you put into it, the more you will get out of it! Grading: Citizenship Grade 50%, Workbook 50% Grading will be based on rubrics below. Each day, students will receive a citizenship grade, and every 2 weeks students will receive a grade for their assignments and journals.
