Raspberry Pi
Abstract The Raspberry Pi is a small (85.60 mm 53.98 mm) single-board computer developed in the UK by the Raspberry Pi Foundation with the intention of promoting the teaching of basic computer science in schools. It is a Broadcom BCM2835 system on a chip (SoC), which includes an ARM1176JZFS 700 MHz processor (The firmware includes a number of "Turbo" modes so that the user can attempt overclocking, up to 1 GHz, without affecting the warranty),VideoCore IV GPU, and was originally shipped with 256 megabytes of RAM, later upgraded to 512 MB. It does not include a built-inhard disk or solid-state drive, but uses an SD card for booting and long-term storage. The Foundation's goal is to offer two versions, priced at US$25 and US$35. The Foundation started accepting orders for the higher priced model B on 29 February 2012, and the lower cost model A on 4 February 2013. The Foundation provides Debian and Arch Linux ARM distributions for download. Also planned are tools for supporting Python as the main programming language, with support for BBC BASIC, (via the RISC OS image or the "Brandy Basic" clone for Linux),C, and Perl. The Raspberry Pi uses Linux kernel-based operating systems. Raspbian is a Debianbased free operating system optimized for the Raspberry Pi hardware. It is the current recommended system, and was officially released in July 2012, although it is still in development. It is possible to run any linux based software in raspberry pi, which makes its possibilities limitless. It is capable of Full HD video output, has an in-built USB as well as ethernet port. All standard keyboard and mouse is supported. At present the following operating systems have been successfully tested on the Raspberry Pi; Arch Linux ARM, Debian Linux, Fedora, FreeBSD, NetBSD, Plan 9, Raspbian OS, RISC OS,Slackware Linux. The Raspberry Pi is a mini-computer with very low power requirement 700 mA (3.5 W), but is capable of performing just like a normal computer. All the devices termed as alternatives to Raspberry Pi tend to be more expensive. No one has made a device at the same price point as Raspberry Pi. They are also less powerful when compared to the Raspberry Pi. All are based on Chinese APIs, so they tend to be low-performance devices. India is a really important market for a device like Raspberry Pi. Indians have recently shown a lot of interest in low-cost computing devices and Raspberry Pi can be a great alternative for those who want to have a good computing device.
