BACKGROUND
The IBIS project focus is to provide evidence-based guidance for the sustainable management of aquatic resources. It aims to achieve this through a research and knowledge transfer programme delivered through a partnership between, the Loughs Agency (cross border government agency based in Ireland/Northern Ireland), the University of Glasgow and Queen's University Belfast. The IBAHCM Strategic Plan notes (section 6: POST GRADUATE TEACHING) that We are part of a joint EU project with the Loughs Agency in Derry and Queen's University in Belfast on 'Integrated Resource Management between Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland'. This four year, 8m project, linked with the SCENE II development, will deliver an extensive package of research training to PhD (12) and masters level (34). 7 of the PhD students and 14 Masters students will be based at this Institute.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
The creation of a fully searchable database likely in the form of a document/content management system using tags to house all the data generated through the postgraduate research programme. This database will be made available through a web-based interface, allowing users (both academics and members of the public) to navigate to a webpage and search the database. The data collected is diverse in its format and will range from raw data files in the form of .csv and .txt types to .pdf and to image and movie files (e.g. .jpg, .tif, .mov, .wav). The parameters of all file types and data collected are not known fully, as they will be generated as the project progresses (project end date June 2015), however at present have a very good idea of what form the data will take.
INTERFACES

Extending global reach - this project focuses on aquatic resource management - a global issue, the data available is therefore pertinent across the globe; several aquatic species researched by IBIS are trans-ocean migrants; invasive species are also researched Community outreach - will allow non-university people to access data and reports generated by Glasgow researchers and is prominently highlighted in the Institute (IBAHCM) Strategic Plan (see Background above). Major funding Institutions (e.g. NERC, BBSRC, ESRC) are pushing for research data to be made available beyond the confines of individual projects. This database could act as an example of how a university unit handles data. Users of the website will be presented with website branding that prominently identifies the database as developed by the University of Glasgow. Population and management of the database would lie with the University of Glasgow-employed academic IBISfunded administration and research support staff, with support from continuing Glasgow, Queens academic staff and permanent Loughs Agency scientific and IT staff. Beyond the end of the external-funding for this IBIS project, the support required for continuation of the completed database can be fully supported by the continuing scientific and IT staff of the three current IBIS project partners. Scientific datasets that are highly complementary to those being collected within the IBIS project are being generated by scientists attached to the Loughs Agency (the statutory trans-national agency); these datasets will also be of use to the same users searching for IBIS-generated data. Should the capacity of the database be scaleable without untoward additional development effort, it could be publicly-positioned as University of Glasgow-developed hub with the potential to become the premier publicly-searchable repository for data related to aquatic resource management of primary relevance to the British Isles environment.
USER STORIES
As a member of the project team I want to specify the requirements for the database, allowing sufficient flexibility to house the varying kinds of datasets the project will gather. As a member of the project team I want to be able to upload structured datasets to the system and tag them with metadata. As a member of the project team I want to be able to upload unstructured data (documents/media) to the system and tag them with metadata. As a user of the system I want to be able to search the structured datasets on multiple fields and be presented with appropriate datasets to download. As a user of the system I want to be able to search the files and reports on multiple criteria (including content where applicable) and be presented with a list of files to view/download. As a member of the project team, I would like the system to group lat/long co-ordinates into countries for easier searching. As a user of the system I would like to be able to view the available data on a map representing the location it was gathered at and filter on multiple criteria (e.g., file type, date). As a member of MVLS IT I want to be able to access the servers owned by the Loughs Agency to install and maintain the system.
PROJECT TOLERANCES
Visualisation of data via maps (see penultimate user story) is a lower priority and can be delayed until a future date if required
