One level provides a literal, and seemingly superficial meaning, but a second level reveals a deeper, symbolic/metaphorical meaning - an extended metaphor - How it compares to metaphors, symbolism -Metaphors are comparisons between two seemingly dissimilar things; symbols associate two things, but their meaning is both literal and figurative - metaphor: a white blank is a metaphor for a snow covered land - symbol: American flag stands for freedom
