Study Guide Chapters 2-4

The exam consists of 6 matching vocabulary questions, 25 multiple-choice questions, and 1 short response question. There are a total of 35 points possible on the exam. Vocabulary Matching: The vocabulary contained in the matching portion does not necessarily contain words that were on the quiz. HOWEVER, none of the words are words that we did not go over in lecture. If you wrote lecture notes, you will know the answer.

Concepts to review: Elements on the period table used in Biology Basic chemistry (structure of an atom, atomic weight, atomic mass, valence, electronegativity) make sure you can calculate molecular mass. Bonding (covalent, ionic, polar covalent, etc) and the properties of the bonds that result in their relative strength/weakness. How different bonds react with water. Properties of water (specific heat, ice floats, adhesion, cohesion, surface tension) and real life examples of these properties. Acids/Bases/Buffers: o How do you make something more acidic or basic? o What does pH mean mathematically? What is the quantifiable difference between a pH of 2 vs. a pH of 3? o How do buffers work? Study the blood buffer carbonic acid and how it works to regulate blood pH. Carbonstudy how it bonds to other atoms Study o o o Study o o o o o the Miller and Urey experiment: What inorganic compounds did they use How did the experiment work? What were the resulting products and how did this give evidence for life? the functional groups of these specific molecules: Amino acids Carbohydrates Lipids Nucleic Acids (Be able to identify the groups and name them)
