Lesson Plan Overview

Title of Lesson Grade Level Essential Questions Optical Art 4th grade What is Op-Art? How do artists make Op-Art? What elements of art are used to make an optical illusion? Big Idea All artists use visual tricks and illusions in their artwork. For example any 2-D artwork that tries to represent a 3-D object is a form of optical illusions, as is the use of perspective in a 2-D artwork. Objectives Students will learn a brief history of Op-Art. Students will use Padlet as a formative assessment that will review our inclass discussion. Students will learn to create their own optical illusions using elements and principles of art that apply. Technology tool Padlet http://padlet.com/wall/os49o7qzq7 Narrative overview In this art lesson students will learn a brief history of Op-Art. Students will look at several examples of Op-Art and as a class we will discuss how optical illusions can be created. Students will learn all about opposite colors (complementary) and high contrast images; we will also discuss the use of patterns and rhythm in artworks. Students will be given instructions on how to create their own optical illusion in an artwork.

While students are working on their own Op-Art project they will be called up to the computer table to answer some questions about our in-class discussion using Padlet.

On Padlet students will view 3 examples of Op-Artworks. They will be asked 1 question about each artwork and will type in their response below the image on the Padlet board.

This is an example of a formative assessment because it is a clear way to assess the students leaning in progress. Through the Padlet responses students will demonstrate their understanding of the concepts that they have just learned in our class discussion. As I read through the students responses I will be able to see who has an understanding of the concepts that students have leaned. I will also be able to see their understanding of the concepts reflected in their artwork. Blooms Taxonomy Connections This art lesson and Padlet assessment activity addresses Blooms Taxonomy on all levels. The questions on Padlet ask students to look at an artwork and describe what they see, they are also asked to recall information from our inclass discussion, these questions clearly address remembering and understanding. Students are also asked to list the elements and principles of art that create the optical illusions; this question addresses that analyzing and evaluation portion of Blooms Taxonomy. And as for the applying and creating aspect of Blooms that will be done when students apply what they have leaned about Op-Art and create their own artwork based on what they have learned.
