The following exercise is intended to strengthen the left hip abductor muscles. Lie on the right side with the left hip and knee flexed. Place the left hand on the top of the left hip. With the left toes facing slightly turned toward the ceiling, slowly raise the left lower extremity toward the ceiling. The hip should not hike up very much during this exercise (1). Use the left hand to monitor and prevent the hip from hiking. You may even push down on the left hip to keep it in place. Also, do not allow the pelvis to rotate forward or backward (2). The hips should remain vertically aligned during this exercise.

Unless otherwise indicted below, perform this exercise to fatigue (usually about 15-20 repetitions).
