Engine Failure Diagnosis

OVERHEAT

NNC [Engine Overheat] OVERHEAT light remains illuminated

FIRE WARNING IF No N1 or N2 zero RPM or airframe vibrations IF No N1, N2 or EGT approaching or exceeding limit IF No IF No N1 or N2 fluctuating up/down IF No Yes Yes Yes Yes

NNC [Engine Fire]

Yes

IF No

NNC [One Engine Inoperative Landing]

FAULT light illuminated IF No Yes

NNC [Eng. Fuel Leak] [Loss of System A/B] NNC [Engine Separation]

NNC [Engine Severe Damage]

Flight into ash cloud Yes

NNC [Loss of thrust on Both Engines] NNC [Volcanic Ash] NNC [Engine Limit]

Unusual engine noises IF No Yes NNC [Engine Stall] NNC [Engine Surge]

N1 and N2 spooldown, EGT decreasing IF No Engine vibrations IF No Yes Yes Both engines IF No NNC [Engine Failure] NNC [High Engine Vibration] No response to thrust lever movement NNC [Engine Limit or Surge or Stall] Yes NNC [Loss of Thrust on Both Engines] NNC [Engine In-Flight Start]

The flow chart above analyses all different kinds of engine failures. As a result, it is far too complex for use in flight. Since multiple kinds of engine failures refer to the same NNC, the following logic gate is more useful in flight :

OVERHEAT

(only)

NNC [ENGINE OVERHEAT] NNC [ENGINE FIRE or Engine Severe Damage or Separation]

FIRE WARNING N1 or N2 zero RPM N1, N2 or EGT near or exceeding limit N1 or N2 fluctuating up/down Unusual engine noises No response to thrust lever movement N1 and N2 and EGT decreasing Engine vibrations (only)

NNC [Engine Limit or Surge or Stall]

NNC [Engine Failure or Shutdown] NNC [High Engine Vibration]
