Native communities and Canadian Government throughout all of Canadian history. As a result of some decisions made by the Canadian government many Natives today struggle to keep their traditions and culture alive. What if we could change that? Maybe we can. On May 22, we will be traveling back in time to the 1870s to appear before the Canadian government prior to when the decision was made to implement residential schools. Our job, as informed citizens from the future, is to advocate for the importance of keeping Native traditions and culture alive. Your Task Choose one Native tradition (e.g. Potlatch, Oral storytelling, restorative justice) Provide a definition of the tradition and what it looks like Create a clear and strong argument for why it is an important tradition Make reference to mistakes made by the early European settlers prior to the 1870s Use a visual aid to enhance your argument (note we will be taking our technology back in time with us.) Include at least three reliable sources To help you with your research, on May 10th we will be hosting a luncheon at the school and Elders from Mississaugas First Nations community will be invited. At the luncheon you will have the opportunity to ask these First Nations people about the tradition you have chosen. Come to the lunch prepared with at least two questions. As students from the future we know the negative impact residential schools had First Nations People and it is important to take our knowledge to advocate for social justice. Though this project is individual, it is a good idea to bounce ideas off each other. If you are stuck ask each other for help; support each other. Be creative! I believe in you.
