Lesson Planning Sheet Title: Applying Pythagoras Theorem Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson: All students

should be able to calculate length of the hypotenuse in a right-angled triangle. Most students should be able to calculate length of the hypotenuse in a right-angled triangle when given in a real life context. Some students should be able to calculate the distance between two coordinate pairs. Keywords: Pythagoras, Theorem, Pythagoras, Perpendicular, Right-angled triangle Learning Activities Starter/Introduction Students create a formal proof of Pythagoras Theorem by arranging four congruent right angled triangles around a square whose length is the hypotenuse of one right angled triangle. A worksheet is provided in additional resources to aid the demonstration. Use the Pythagoras Proof video to feedback. Development Use the interactive Microsoft Excel file to work through a couple of examples for calculating the hypotenuse when the other two lengths are known. Have the class attempt some problems on mini-whiteboards for assessment and feedback. The remainder of the development phase is used to practise and consolidate using the theorem by calculating the hypotenuse length for more abstract problems. A common misconception is failing to recognise that Pythagoras Theorem is applicable since the diagram was not sketched. Therefore, ensure the students use a clear writing frames and annotated diagrams throughout since multiple lines of working are needed for the majority of problems. Plenary To calculate the length of the line segment between the two coordinate pairs students need to visualise it as the hypotenuse of a right angled triangle whose two shorter side are determined by the difference of the two x and y values. Use the interactive Microsoft Excel file to provide additional practise with this if required. Differentiation More able: Students could calculate the length of the hypotenuse in a 3D grid. Less Able Use Pythagorean triples to aid the calculation of the hypotenuse side.
