This slide show will help you to

revise chemistry for up coming

exams.
Here are the topics this slide show will
cover.
Acids and Alkalis,
Metals and their reactivity
And tests for different gases.
 Toothpaste

 Vinegar

 Distilled water
Unlucky!

 Toothpaste is actually a alkali. It is use to

NEUTRALISE acid on the teeth.
Try again
Wr ong!

 Distilled water is PH 7 which is neutral.

Try again
Co rrect!

 Vinegar will appear as around PH 3 on

some litmus paper.

Acids and Alk alis

 You will need to have a good knowledge

of acids and alkalis for CE The PH table
goes from pH 1 (Strong acid) to pH 14
(strong alkali). Equation: Acid + Alkali =
Salt + water.
Typ es o f Acids

 There are three types of acids.

 Nitric acid, nitric acid produces nitrates
when reacted with metals.
 Sulphuric acid, sulphuric acid produces
sulphates when reacted with metals.
 Hydrochloric acid, hydrochloric acid
produces chlorides when reacted with
metals.
Hyd ro gen
 You will need to know the test for hydrogen for CE. For
those of you who don’t know, you put a quite reactive
metal like magnesium into acid and trap the gas using
an other test tube. After you think you have collected
enough gas place a lit splint under the test tube with
the gas in it and you should here a squeaky pop.
Remember this equation: Acid + metal = Salt +
water + hydrogen.
At what pH do you thi nk tap
wat er is placed at ?
 pH 7 (Neutral)

 pH 8

 pH 6
COR RECT !

 Water companies make water a pH 8 to

stop the piping from corroding.

 Continue
WRO NG !

 An intelligent guess but you are wrong!

 Go Back
WRO NG !

 If the water was too acidic it would

corrode the copper piping.

 Go Back
Alk alis

 There are many different alkalis in use in

day to day house substances such as
toothpaste, Drain cleaner and farmers
use limes to neutralise acidic soil.
Test for CO 2

 Bubble the suspected gas into some lime

water and it should go cloudy if CO2 is
present.
Te st f or oxyg en

 Place a glowing splint near the

suspected gas and it should relight it to a
decent flame.
Th e Re activi ty Se rie s

• You will need to have a basic

understanding of the order of reactivity of
metals.
 I hope this slide show has helped you to
revise for upcoming Exams.
