A Timeline of Events: United Kingdom and Civil Rights

Britain started experiencing an increase in multi culturalism as thousands of immigrants from places such as Jamaica, the Caribbean, and Poland arrived for industrial and work opportunities. Racial violence saw an increase in major cities such as London and Nottingham. Paul Stephenson, a black teacher, led a boycott against a Bristol bus company who had a color ban and wouldnt hire Black or Asian employees. The boycott lasted 60 days before the ban was lifted.

The Bill of Rights was created in 1689 to promote individual liberties and control the power of government.

Slavery was banned in all of the British Empire because of constant protests and abolitionists.

The Notting Hill race riots took place in London, England. The Teddy Boys were showing a growing hostility towards black families and West Indian workers. The riots went on for several days as houses were ravaged and people were attacked; nine white youths were arrested as a result.

To curb racial tensions, Print Minister Harold Wilson created legislation that made racial discrimination a legal offense.
