The Career Exploration Odyssey Self-Directed Career Exploration Syllabus Welcome

Hello, I am Bemie Enyong, Career Development Counselor for first year, full-time students, and I will be your instructor. Please read the entire syllabus to understand how to use this workshop. You may then post an introduction to the bulletin board and begin with any of the three modules in this workshop. If you have any questions please contact me using the information below. Workshop Overview The purpose of this workshop is to provide you with knowledge of your career preferences, an understanding of the world of work and available career options, and to help you understand how various academic majors can help you prepare for various careers. The workshop consists of three modules which you may complete in any order. Objectives Module 1: Know Yourself o Students will perform an assessment of their values, career interests, and personality types. Upon completion of this module, students will be able to explain their personality type, define their areas of vocational strength, and describe their personal work values. Module 2: Know Your Career Options o Students will analyze various careers by reviewing comprehensive descriptions and labor market requirements including education, knowledge and skills, and experience. Upon completion of this module, students will be able to explain the core responsibilities for their top 5 jobs, and describe the amount of education and the level of experience required for each choice. Module 3: Know Your Academic Options o Students will identify linkages between careers of interest and academic majors. Upon completion of this module, students will be able explain the coursework relating to the academic majors required for their top 2 jobs.

The Career Exploration Odyssey Self-Directed Career Exploration Syllabus Course Materials Hardware: Windows XP or higher or Mac OSX 10.5 or higher Software: Mozilla Firefox Word Processing: PC: MS Office Mac: iWork or MS Office Module Notes and Handouts: Handouts should be printed out using Microsoft Word or a Mac equivalent. Please print out the course documents by clicking on Handouts on the course home page right beneath the Syllabus. Course Expectations Personal Attributes for Success Thank you for completing this course either independently or upon the instructions of your professor. Since this workshop is self-directed it requires a high level of initiative and good time management skills to complete. If you have any questions or if you are unsure of something do not hesitate to contact me because the only incorrect question is the one which is never asked! Format of Modules Modules were created to be informative, engaging, and moderate in length, so that each one can generally be completed in about 1 hour. However, if you find that you need more time then take the time that you need; the timeframe of 1 hour per module is merely a guideline or suggestion. You may complete the modules in random order or sequentially: You choose the method that works best for you. Submitting Work Modules are designed to be self-contained so they may be completed in any order. Additionally, enrollment is continuously open so students may access the modules at any point during the semester. If the workshop is part of a class assignment, then all three modules should be completed within 1 week of the start date. Follow Up Please contact me at benyong@123.edu to set up a follow up appointment to review the results of your career exploration and to create short term and long term goals. Most students find it helpful to speak with a career development counselor to synthesize the results of their assessments, research, and reflection.

You may also listen to podcasts, visit related career websites, blogs, or forums, and have access to other online resources and texts. Assignments and Grading Accruing a total of 100 points is possible based on completion of all three assignments for each module. If the modules are completed as part of a classroom assignment the professor may assign grade values to the points.
