3rd Grade

Religion: Religion is integrated into all aspects of the curriculum. Students learn more about Gods grace, mercy, and great love, as well as the key concepts of faith, such as Law and Gospel, confession, repentance, forgiveness and grace. Memory work is given to students to strengthen their relationship with God and His Word. Reading: The Third Grade Reading Curriculum connects whole class and small group instruction through a themed-based comprehension strategy. The program links literacy skills to standards-based genre such as science and social studies content. Instruction focuses on critical listening, modeled, shared, interactive and independent reading, writing, phonemic awareness, vocabulary development, and speaking within content-specific themes. Writing/Spelling: Writing instruction takes place across the curriculum in all genres and focuses on the writing traits and the writing process. Writing experiences include descriptions, personal narrative, paragraphing, how-to essays, letter writing, persuasive writing, and informational and expository writing. Third Grade Spelling develops the students capacity to pronounce, spell, use, look up in the dictionary, and understand the definitions of words. Math: Students learn a variety of mathematical concepts throughout the year, such as: addition and subtraction, the meaning of place values, strategies and word problems, various ways to collect and share data and information, capacity and measurement in both standard and metric units, algebra, geometry, concepts of time, temperature, money, fractions, probability, multiplication, division, and economics. The Math Curriculum is enhanced with various hands-on investigations that allow for individual exploration and continued development of mathematical concepts. Social Studies: The Social Studies Curriculum focuses on all aspects of communities. Students learn why people form communities and how they work, including the people, laws, places

and resources that make up a community. Students learn how communities have changed from the past to the present, especially about the various cultures that that form communities that make up the United States. Science: The Science Curriculum uses hands-on experiments and demonstrations throughout the genre with an emphasis on Life Science and Physical Science. Students also participate in various activities that incorporate and develop understanding of the Scientific Process. Technology: Each student has a personal ipad that is used throughout the day, and integrated across curriculum. Each student also has access to one of our MAC laptop computers. A full-time technology coach assists classroom teachers in supporting curriculum through the integration of technology in all curricular areas. Each Third Grade Classroom is equipped with a Smart Board, which increases student engagement through interactive activities that enhance the curriculum.
