Policy CH Annual Nursing Competency Requirements


Summary This policy outlines the guidelines of requirements of the nursing staff for annual competency. All the nursing staff must participate in annual education and training in order to maintain or increase their competency or be subject to disciplinary action.

POLICY: It is the policy of Carondelet Health (CH) that all the nursing staff participates in annual education and training in order to maintain or increase their competency. The purpose of the annual requirements of CH is to ensure that the staff is competent to perform their job responsibilities and to define the competencies required of the staff that provides patient care, treatment or services. Employees who fail to comply with these requirements will be subject to the CH disciplinary process. PROCEDURE: All nursing staff hired as part of Nursing Services will be required to attend mandatory education requirements each calendar year. 1. Employees will sign up to attend the required education and competencies each Calendar year as defined by their job description and department competency requirements. 2. Competency Cruise (annual education and training) will be offered several times during the calendar year and will be scheduled at SJMC and SMMC. The nursing staff may sign up via CNET and attend at either facility. 3. Pre-work on line via CNET will be required and available for all nursing staff to complete prior to attending Competency Cruise. NOTE: New hires are not required to attend Competency Cruise during their hire year, as of January 1, 2010. (Education will be provided during their Nursing Orientation).

Any nursing service staff who did not participate in annual education and training in calendar year 2009 will be required to attend competency education by 3/31/10. 4. Managers will support nursing staff attendance at the required education/competency by supporting nursing staff scheduling needs. 5. Some specialty units may be able to meet their general competency requirements during their unit-specific skills day, provided the content of the competency is the same as the annual education and training. Specialty units need to receive approval for their unit-specific skills day with the Professional Development Council and/or the Education Department. 6. If the annual education/Competency Cruise is not completed during a calendar year by the nursing staff (including relief and PRN staff), they will be placed on unpaid suspension until they become compliant. 7. It is expected that all participants of Competency Cruise adhere to the current CH Employee Appearance (Dress Code) policy while attending. No children are to be present during Competency Cruise.
