We welcome all subscribers and those interested to submit articles. We pride ourselves on excellence in publishing. We are not a scholarly journal but bring a standard of professionalism to the craft of writing and lifestyle of re-enacting. Articles are to be informative and productive to generate conversation, research, and experimental archaeology for all history lovers. Modern politics and religion should be avoided as should racism, sexism, and all forms of hate speech. Have fun; be respectful. Title Each article submitted for review should have the title, Authors name as it will appear if chosen for publishing, and the current word count. Page numbers and headings are not necessary. Author Bio Below the title information authors should include a biographical statement of no more than two sentences in length. This may include any information about the author from hobbies to vocation, hometown, or re-enactment pursuits. Let the audience know who you are and welcome them into your conversation. History of the Journal of the Early Americas: From Rags to Linen Rags (1444 words) By Joe Schmoe: Joe lives in Kokomo, Indiana with his wife Flo, son Beau, and dog Buster. He has been involved in living history and library science for the past twenty years and loves trying out new syllabub recipes. 500-2000 words - Articles should be submitted electronically as attachments (Microsoft Word .doc format works best): Times New Roman typeface, 12-point font, doublespaced, 1-inch margins, and 500-2000 words in length. Style Sentences should be concise and precise. Use one space after all end punctuation. Follow standard rules on bold and italics that is rarely use them do italicize all foreign words. Quotes Quotation marks should only be used for quotations. Primary document analysis is preferred over secondary. Direct quotations should be used sparingly and only when paraphrasing is impossible. Block quotations, over three lines in length, should be used even more sparingly and require single spacing and block indenting. Offer analysis after a quotation. Prove to your readers why your take on the facts is worth considering. Chicago Endnotes - All prospective articles must be properly cited in Chicago Manual Style endnotes. not to catch cheaters but to give credit where credit is due, pointing interested readers and researchers to your sources or to encourage them to use your research methods on sources they explore. Plagiarism in any form is not accepted - An article submitted with verifiable plagiarism will result in the article not being accepted as well as a lifetime ban for the author publishing in our organization. Not only is this theft of intellectual property, it goes against the generous sense of community at the root of historical re-enacting. Editing - By choosing to submit an article for review, you, the author, agree to give Journal of the Early Americas editorial purview of your writing. You still own it, but our staff will correct all grammatical and syntax errors and often make stylistic and mild content changes. Articles are expected to be self-reviewed at the time of submission we will not rewrite entire pieces. Previously Published Pieces - The author is responsible for alerting JOTEA staff if any or all of a piece has ever appeared in a different publication and to secure the rights to reprint it. Images All images to be used with an article must be high resolution at a 300 DPI (Dots Per Inch) minimum. Rights to reproduce images must be secured by either the author or JOTEA. Original photographs, art, and public domain images are encouraged. Reproduction Requests - It is also the responsibility of the author to locate the ownership and rights for any image to be used with an article and to inform us how we can purchase or ask for permission to publish these images. We value and respect intellectual property rights. Such images will be used on a limited basis as cost allows, but we do wish to include images of period art and material culture whenever possible. Stipends We pay our Authors! By submitting an article, the author also agrees to be paid our current rate of a $50 maximum for a final edited version of an article. One does have the right to wave this payment or apply it towards a subscription. We value and appreciate our contributing writers and look forward to reading each piece as much as our subscribers.
