FACT SHEET ON ADOLESCENT SEXUALITY CONCERNS AMONG FILIPINO YOUTH

TEEN PREGNANCY >30 % of total births among women of reproductive age (15-49) is contributed by the youth 15-24 yrs. Old.

YOUTH MARRIAGES
30% were married before they reached age 20. More than half of those married admitted that they were too young and were forced by difficult circumstance into those marriage.

BIRTHS OUT OF WEDLOCK


74% of total estimated illegitimate births are from 15-24 yrs.old. 21% were from 15-19 while 53% are among the 20-24 age bracket.

MATERNAL & INFANT MORTALITY/MORBIDITY


Young women are also likely to give births to babies who are premature, suffering from low birth weight, inborn defects and mental retardation

Timing in sexual debut is still 18 yrs. Although there seems to be a faster pace of losing virginity as age increase. First sex experience was with someone the girls romantically linked with, although it is moving from fiancee in favor of just boyfriends. Unprotected sexual behavior among young males w/ casual sex show that 90% of such encounters are unprotected-78% admit to no protection even w/ commercial sex workers.

REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH PROBLEMS


For married females diminish desire for sex and painful intercource Common problems dysmenorrhea and painful urination Young married youth experience more problems than singles.

PSYCHOSOCIAL
MOST COMMON IMMEDIATE CONSEQUENCES IS FEAR OF PARENTAL REACTIONS. PREMARITAL SEXUAL INTERCOURSE IS HIGHER AMONG OUT OF SCHOOL YOUTH & WORKING YOUTH THAN FOR THE IN-SCHOOL RESPONDENCE.
