Instructional Plan Incorporating Technology

Virtual Choir or Band

Standards: PDE 9.1.A Know and use the elements and principles of each art form to create works in the arts and humanities. PDE 9.1.C Identify and use comprehensive vocabulary within each of the arts forms. PDE 9.2.E Analyze how historical events and culture impact forms, techniques and purposes of works in the arts. PDE 9.4.B Know how to communicate an informed individual opinion about the meaning of works in the arts

Objectives: 1. Students will discuss the meaning of the song, We Shall Overcome and its impact on historical and cultural events during the 1960s. 2. Students will practice and perform their voice or instrument part to the song We Shall Overcome using interpretations decided on in the discussion 3. Students will use recording technology to record their individual part to the song We Shall Overcome. 4. Students will use computer editing technology to combine the each part into one ensemble. 5. Students will solicit other schools to join the project.

Instructional Plan Incorporating Technology


Procedure: Bellringer: Students will brainstorm a moment in their life where they had to overcome something. (Teacher will facilitate discussion) 1. Teacher will inform students about the song, We Shall Overcome and its designation as the Anthem of the Civil Rights Movement. 2. Students will use a Google Safe Search to research the Civil Rights Movement to gain knowledge of what the movement was and how music played a role. Students will be asked to also research a one person from the movement and what they overcame. 3. Students will share their findings with the ensemble. 4. Students will be given music to We Shall Overcome and asked to practice and perform their part individually as they are the person they researched telling their story through music. 5. Students will record their parts individually using Audacity recording software (freeware 5a. Students will record their part by following a video of the conductor as they perform their individual parts. 6. Students, with the help of the teacher, will begin piecing each individual part together to create an entire ensemble of individually recording parts. 7. Once the completed sound file is completed, it will be played and a discussion will be held with the ensemble about what they thought about the project and what it meant to them. 8. The ensemble will invite other music ensembles to submit their individual part to be included in the recording. Closure: Students will share with each other and the class what meant the most to them during the project.

Assessment: Successful completion of the research, performance, and editing components will be put up against a generated rubric to assess the students ability to complete the assigned tasks.
