Case 2270 Ultrasonic Examination of Welds Made by the Electron Beam Process Section VIII, Division 1 Inquiry: Under what conditions may the ultrasonic examination required in UW-11(e) of welds made by the electron beam process be waived? Reply: It is the opinion of the Committee that the ultrasonic examination required in UW-11(e) of welds made

by the electron beam process may be waived when the welds do not exceed 14 in. in thickness, and are examined by magnetic particle in accordance with Appendix 6; or, when magnetic particle examination is not applicable for the material of construction, by liquid penetrant in accordance with Appendix 8. This Case number shall be shown on the Manufacturers Data Report.

The Committees function is to establish rules of safety, relating only to pressure integrity, governing the construction of boilers, pressure vessels, transport tanks and nuclear components, and inservice inspection for pressure integrity of nuclear components and transport tanks, and to interpret these rules when questions arise regarding their intent. This Code does not address other safety issues relating to the construction of boilers, pressure vessels, transport tanks and nuclear components, and the inservice inspection of nuclear components and transport tanks. The user of the Code should refer to other pertinent codes, standards, laws, regulations or other relevant documents.
