Procedures and approximate time allocated for each event

Launch (5 minutes) Review vocabulary We have been learning about human and natural characteristics. Last week, we learned that geographers use the words natural characteristic to describe things that are part of the earth. They use the words human characteristics to describe things that are made by humans. Today, we are going on a natural and human characteristics hunt in some pictures. Explore (20 minutes) Teacher will give directions and expectations for the activity. I will give you a picture, and you will search for some human and natural characteristics. You will use this recording sheet. It looks just like the t-chart we made in our last lesson. On the left side it says Natural Characteristics and on the right side it says Human characteristics. On the left side of the chart, you will draw and label pictures of at least two natural characteristics that you found. On the right side of the chart, you will draw and label at least two human characteristics that you found. You must have at least two of each kind. Teacher will ask students to repeat directions: How many natural characteristics do you need? How many human characteristics do you need? When I call your table group quickly and quietly walk up and get your paper and your picture and walk back to your seat.

Summarize (15 minutes) After children have had time to work call them back to the carpet. Partner share: Students will turn to a partner and share the characteristics they found in their picture. Whole-Class: Teacher will hold up a large copy of each picture individually. When the students see their picture they will be asked to share some of their drawings and observations with the class. Ask students to justify reasoning for classifications as natural or human characteristics. Today, we went on a natural and human characteristics hunt in pictures. Tomorrow, we will look for natural and human characteristics on maps. Assessment Playground Hunt Looking for students to correctly categorize observed objects as human or natural characteristics Share Looking for students to justify placement of objects as either human or natural characteristics. Simplifications Some students will be asked to find one natural and one human characteristic. Teacher will choose an object and the student will categorize it as natural or human characteristic. Extensions Students who finish early will be encouraged to find more than two of each characteristic. Students will be asked to write about an activity they engaged in on the playground (swinging, tag, soccer) and describe the human and physical characteristics they interacted with.
