THE CONCEPT OF GENRE

Genre
A particular class of speech events (written included) which are considered by the speech community as same type (Richards, Plat & Platt, 1993)

Genre
Broad rhetorical patterns Narratives, recounts, arguments and expositions sometimes referred to as elemental genres, which combine to form more complex everyday macro genes (Martin, 1992) An elemental genre such as a procedure can be found in macro genes, such as lab reports, instruction ,manuals and recipes

Macro genre Might be composed of several elemental genres such as an exposition, a discussion and a rebutal

Key influence is functional linguistics. Language is a social phenomenon and as such is shaped by purposes to which it is put and the audiences to which it is addressed
