Biology 14/05/13 Components of blood Blood consists of plasma, WBCs & platelets, RBCs.

Plasma - The fluid portion of blood Suspends red and white blood cells and platelets Contains dissolved gases, hormones, wastes and nutrients

Red blood cells produced in red blood marrow Each RBC consists of the protein haemoglobin Function is to transport oxygen Livers 4/5 months before it is broken down in the spleen

White blood cells larger than RBC but fewer in concentration Held in reserve in the spleen and kidneys There are two types; phagocytes (which engulf harmful bacteria/debri) and lymphocytes (which produce antibodies)

Platelets are cell fragments (do not have nucleus) Responsible for blood clotting and preventing blood loss.
