General Director, OMF International We will not hide them from their children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done. . . . so the next generation would know them, . . . and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds. Psalm 78:4-7
Gods people have been given the wonderful privilege of telling Gods faithfulness, His power and His wonderful deeds to the next generation, so that they too will continue to put their trust in God. One of the ways to tell the stories of Gods faithfulness is through books and literature. When the founder of the China Inland Mission, James Hudson Taylor, wrote China: Its Spiritual need and Claims, and published it in 1865, the book had a huge impact on countless Christians across the European continent, North America as well as Australia. It soon became and still is a key inspiration for many who respond to Gods call to enter the mission field. Likewise, another book, Chinas Millions, which documents testimonies of the wonderful work of God in China between 1875 and 1952, has over the past 70 years spoken to the hearts and minds of many Christians. Since then, the Mission has published many more books to challenge Christians around the world. Its successor, OMF International, remains committed to declaring the faithfulness of God through books and publications in the digital age. We want to share with others Gods mighty work among East Asias millions, and like Israel, tell the stories of Gods power and wonders, that future generations would continue to put their trust in Him and will not forget His deeds. To all OMF International book writers, may I encourage you to write, write for the Kingdom, write to give glory to God, write to present God to the world, write with energy, write with honesty, write with relevancy, write with laughter and tears, write and tear it apart and write again. Be prepared for disappointments, yet be ready for surprises. Your critics will be your best friend, particularly your children, if you have any (they can be brutally honest but critically insightful). Make sure the layman understands what you are saying. May you write with joy and may God use your writing to bless others.

The written word continues to touch peoples lives. Whether it is read from paper or from screen, Gods mind and purposes communicated through the writings of His people will continue to stir hearts and souls. This book refreshed my spirit. NO SOLITARY EFFORT
How the CIM Worked to Reach the Tribes of Southwest China
by
Neel Roberts
No Solitary Effort describes how members of the China Inland Mission engaged the tribes of Southwest China as part of their comprehensive plan to evangelize all of China from 1865 to 1951. That endeavor required the combined lifelong efforts of numerous missionaries, spanned several generations, and was invariably affected by events and decisions that occurred thousands of miles from where the actual ministry was taking place. The task was incomplete when the missionaries were forced to leave, but the foundations for the Church which were laid have stood. This book addresses the great challenges to cooperation that faced the missionaries. It also reveals the rich rewards that were obtained by the united efforts of committed Christians who had no timetable for withdrawal, but only an unwavering commitment to work together until the task was accomplished.

Not so secret
Being contemporary agents for mission
by
Graham Orr
The Great CommissionGo and make disciples of all nations... teaching them to obey everything I have commanded youis far more long term and life consuming than we might imagine. And yet it is a great privilege- living where God has placed us, we step out of our home-made security and pass on the good news to those with whom we live and work. Graham Orrs years leading a church in urban Tokyoone of the toughest places to do evangelismhave given him deep insight into how to reach those who have no knowledge of, or interest in, Christianity. Graham Orr taught in England and Japan before training for ministry. He and his wife Alison spent years in Japan with OMF, where he pastored OMF The Chapel of Adoration in Tokyo until 2009. He now speaks widely, training church members and missionaries in evangelism.

Christine Dillon
Everybody loves a good story. In a generation when pre-packaged gospel formulas can leave people cold, well-told Bible stories can be used powerfully. After ministry in both Western and non-Western cultures, church planter Christine Dillon has discovered that Bible storying is far more effective than most other forms of evangelistic presentations. In fact, non-Christians actually enjoyed storying and kept coming back for more. Storying provides solid biblical foundations so listeners can understand, apply, and respond to the gospel, and then go on to fruitful maturity in Gods service. Jerry Root of Christianity Today says: Telling the Gospel through Story provides a fresh approach to all who take evangelism seriously and seek proficiency at making Christ known. This book includes practical guidance on how to shape a good story, how to do evangelism through storying, and how to lead Bible discussions. This guide provides you with concrete steps for sharing the ultimate Story that everyone needs to hear.

Tell Us a Story
Stories from China told by John and Edith Bell to their grandchildren
Authored by John and Edith Bell Edited by Ruth Bell Nyquist, James Nyquist
In 1921 John Bell and his new bride, Edith, left Canada to spend 25 years as pioneer missionaries in northwest China on the borders of Tibet. These stories about their extraordinary experiences in this volatile period in the history of China so fascinated their grandchildren that near the end of their lives John and Edith were persuaded to record them. Although most of the stories are about peaceful interaction with the diverse population and cultures of the region, they are also tales of high adventure--piracy, wars and wartime imprisonment, hazardous escapes by raft down the Yellow River and by plane over "the hump" to safety in India, a cruise-like repatriation on the Gripsholm--all of which effectively scattered the family across three countries for many years until their reunion in Canada in 1945. However, the real story is about the goodness and faithfulness of God in guiding, protecting, providing for and maturing an untrained and inexperienced young couple who dared to trust God to enable them to fulfill his call to them.

My China Mystery
by
Marion Andrews
Frank and Ella Whites passion was to touch the people of China. They met while working for the China Inland Mission in the nineteen forties, seeking to take the Gospel to a culture steeped in idol worship. But their work was cut short and they were forced to flee. In later years Frank rarely spoke of his time in China. It was only when he died that his daughter, Marion Andrews, discovered a treasure-trove of photos with accounts of his time there. These photos, combined with his prayer letters, uncovered the mystery of her parents work in pre-Communist China. My China Mystery will take you on a journey into another time and culture, as Frank and Ella White take the name of Jesus to a people in need. As Marion discovers her history in China and receives the honours of a war hero for his work in China, the mystery is revealed.

Despite its modern, high-tech cities and veneer of Western influence, Taiwan is a deeply traditional society, steeped in idol worship and fear of the spirit world. The gospel has made little impact on this highly superstitious culture. This guide will help you know how to pray for the working-class majority so the light of the gospel will break through into their dark lives. The stories not only talk about the people of Taiwan, but also about how we are trying to reach them. We are trying to answer the, What do you do?, question that we are so often asked. Global Mission
Reflections and Case Studies in Local Theology for the Whole Church
by
Rose Dowsett
Global Mission is divided into two sections: the first, Reflections and Foundations, comprises nine essays of a more general nature; the second, Contextualization at Work, contains twenty one essays of a more specific nature, most of them case studies from a particular location and people group. The thirty-three contributors come from five continents, and a host of contexts. Some are veterans, some quite young, but every one of them is passionate about Gods mission, and about building bridges for the gospel in a way that is absolutely faithful to Scripture but also sensitive to specific contexts. North and South, East and West, demonstrate precious unity in Christ in our common calling. Contextualization is complex, and none of the authors claim to have got everything right. But their essays are thoughtful, and written out of love for God and love for his world. They tell the stories of trial and error, of struggles and triumphs, as each seeks to present Christ in terms that make sense and can be understood. It is following the process, quite as much as specific conclusions, which make this book valuable and transferable to many other parts of the global church. The essays also give us a peep into many different societies, and the birthing of faith in the grace of the Holy Spirit. Thus we give thanks to God for all that he is wonderfully doing around his world and stimulate our prayers for those who work cross-culturally, especially in pioneer situations.
Patrick Fung General Director, OMF International, Singapore Enjoy a colorful tapestry of contextualization theory and theological critique together with powerful real-life stories from many lands. Biblical contextualization the Word to the worldis the core of this book. This is a book for everyone who is concerned about how to bring the Word to every culture and tongue faithfully, creatively, and relevantly.

Unless God helps us, there is no hope! Captain Morris yelled over the roar of the storm. Hudson Taylor had to agree. Indeed the Dumfries might sink this very day and he would never live to see the shores of China, a land whose people he was certain God had called him to. Hudson survived his perilous maiden voyage to his beloved China. With his heart set in determined obedience to God, and trusting the provision of the one who had called him, Hudson overcame persecution and overwhelming personal losses to bring Gods truth to the ripe harvest fields of China. Today Hudson Taylors story continues to challenge and inspire believers young and old to carry the gospel message, regardless of personal trial or hardships, to those who are adrift and without hope.

Radical Discipleship
by
Roger Steer
Radical. Extremist? Terrorist? Christian? These days being radical is associated with violence and intolerance. But what does it mean for a Christian to be a radical disciple of Jesus? To parade around campus in your Christian hoodie? To wear your cross-marked wrist strapping to rugby? To get up before everyone else to read your Bible and pray? Hudson Taylor was a radical disciple. He was unremarkable in many ways and only 21 when he began his ministry but he was committed and passionate about Jesus. He broke social and cultural expectations to remain true to the gospel. Far from being a negative thing, Taylors life shows us that being a radical disciple is about relationship-developing, social-working and Kingdom-building. It is about extremes of joy, peace, love and dependence on God despite suffering, poverty or even ridicule. Roger Steer has drawn together a collection of real life instances from Taylors remarkable life, with each one teaching, by example, the true meaning of radical discipleship. Prepare then, to find this small book packs a great punch. Be open to what God says to you through it. It may well prove to be a life-changing read; and you will not regret the change. J.I. Packer

J. Hudson Taylor
Understanding the Song of Solomon by Hudson Taylor revised and edited by M. E. Tewksbury. Scripture taken from the NIV. This book, designed to lead the seeking Bible reader into the presence of God, is one of the lasting legacies of Hudson Taylor. In the obvious power of the Holy Spirit, he has unveiled the deep secrets of true intimacy with Jesus in the simplest of language. The symbol and imagery of the Song of Songs is too often neglected or misunderstood. To those who knew Hudson Taylor, these pages are right out of his everyday life. Even more than his words, his walk with Jesus declared that he really understood intimacy with God. Some may reject this book as being too spiritual or impractical because it deals with true intimacy and actual fellowship with the unseen God of the universe. But the writer of these pages founded the China Inland Mission, now known as OMF International. He translated his vision into life-long service. This is really the goal of these few short chapters. They reveal an intimacy that comes from experience. They open a pathway through this little piece of Gods Word that will lead you to the very heart of God.

Original writings from J. Hudson Taylor on China. It is arguably the most significant work regarding Christian missions to China in the 19th century. A manifesto of Taylors life and work, it describes in stark detail the desperate lack of Protestant Christian missionary endeavor among the people of China. The book was reprinted several times over thirty years and motivated uncounted numbers of Christians in Europe, North America,Australia, and New Zealand to volunteer for service in east Asia. Chinas Spiritual Need and Claims helped foster the widest evangelistic campaign since the time of Paul the Apostle. The word China, China, China is now ringing in our ears in that special, peculiar, musical, forcible, unique way in which Mr. Taylor utters it. Charles Spurgeon 42

Revised and updated edition of a Christian classic. Teaches principles of leadership from Scriptures and the biographies of eminent men of God.

Spiritual Discipleship
Principles of Following Christ for Every Believe As J. Oswald points out, true discipleship is more than intellectual assent to a belief in Christ--it involves the whole person and lifestyle. Those with only superficial belief will soon fall away from the faith, but Sanders says a true disciple would rather be presented with a difficult challenge than a soft option. Disciples are charged with the task of training themselves to be godly, because it is their responsibility to remain spiritually fit. Ever-fresh topics in this time-tested volume include:
the disciples second chance the disciples ambition the disciples sentior partner the disciples Olympics the disciples right the disciples maturity
Spiritual Maturity
Principles of Spiritual Growth for Every Believer Spiritual maturity is not a level of growth Christians achieve, but the passion to press on in Christ. In these concise chapters, J. Oswald Sanders explores the primary source of continual growth. As we embrace Gods providence, hardship, and more, we can move from infancy toward the fruitful maturity we were created to enjoy. Now, this new edition of Spiritual Maturity includes a For Reflections section, making it an ideal resource for both individual and group study.

Shoe-Leather Commitment:
Guidelines for Disciples
The terms Christian and disciple should be synonymous. But theyre not. Today, one may be regarded as a Christian even if he demonstrates few, if any, signs of discipleship. The message Jesus proclaimed was a call to faith with obedience. He doesnt want us to simply believe His teachings --- He wants us to live them.

These come to life as people we can identify with and learn from, because God uses imperfect servants to do His perfect will: Noah, Isaac, Solomon, Nehemiah & Luke, to name some of them. Imagine the Bibles portraying only perfect saints - people who never lied, never feared, never doubted God. Instead, God chose to show His servants exactly as they were.

Mountain Rain
by
James Fraser had realised Satans aim to cut off communication with God. The devil deludes the soul with a sense of defeat, covers it with a thick cloud of darkness and depresses and oppresses the spirit. The result is hindered prayer and unbelief. Instead of descending into defeat, the believer needs to have faith the evidence of things not seen. Satan detests the prayer of faith. He does not much mind rambling carnal prayers, for they do not hurt him much. But if we attain to a definite faith in God for a definite object, it is an authoritative notice for him to quit. James Fraser wrestled to maintain this definite faith. In the mountains of South-West China, living amongst the people of the Lisu tribe, he began a spiritual battle. They were steeped in centuries of demon worship and had never heard of Jesus. As he struggled with bouts of loneliness and depression, his encounters with the powers of darkness increased his confidence in God and the power of prayer. Though he felt much heartache and disappointment, his prayers for the Lisu were answered. Believers were numbered in their thousands and churches began to spring up as the Lisu spread the Gospel among their own people.

A legacy continues
In Appreciation of James Hudson Taylor III (1929-2009)
A Most Worthy Tribute In 2007 I had the privilege of meeting Dr. James Hudson Taylor III when he addressed a meeting of the Langham Partnership International Council in Hong Kong. We asked him to share his insights in what we called a China Forum. None of us can forget the combination of quiet humility and deep authority with which he spoke. His survey was comprehensive, informative, filled with profound inside understanding of the Chinese world, and helped us distinguish truth from apperances, reality from hyperbole. This book has exactly those same characteristics and as such is a most worthy tribute in his honour. Its combination of wholesome biblical foundations, sound missional theology and practice, fascinating information and personal reminiscences (and that is only the English articles that I could read!), will contribute strongly to the continued fruitfulness of this remarkable familys legacy. a boys war
by
David Michell
A Boys War is a true story of a boy in China in a Japanese concentration camp during the World War II. Yet it is an account more about children and their adventures than the atrocities of a deathcamp. And it includes glimpses of Olympic God Medalist Eric Liddell not included in Chariots of Fire. What might have been simply a tale of agonizing separation of a schoolboy from his parents - a separation that spanned six years and included war, danger, malnutrition, and tragedy - is a story that lights up with adventure, ingenuity, heroism and hope. The unquenchability of the human spirit under extreme pressure and influence of godly faith and sacrificial example is hard circumstances shine through.

Neighboring villages considered the remote village of Taguangu Philippines trash. Its reputation was well-deserved. Taguangu was little more than a den of loafers brawlers drunkards gamblers and thieves. Desperate for change three Manobo believers asked God to send a missionary to Taguangu. At that very time God called Ria Zebua from the tiny island of Nias in Indonesia to take the gospel of salvation to the Manobo people. But to which village should Ria go? A Secret Hope tells how God directed her and a team of Filipino missionaries to the Manobo of Taguangu that lair of crooks and ruffians. There they saw God do the impossible again and again.

Don Cormack
The heart-wrenching story of the Cambodian church, told by a man who spent 20 years among the Cambodian people. Christian Book of the Year 1998 An unfinished portrait of the Cambodian Church the Church that would not die. As I read this, I paused every few minutes and sobbed in anger. Amid this great tragedy, the extraordinary power of faith, hope, and love manifests itself in the lives of a few ordinary Christians. They are my heroes. How I wish all Khmer Rouge leaders would read this book, weep in repentance, and find forgiveness in the Lord Jesus Christ. Dr Sorpong Peou, a survivor of the killing fields. The Cambodian Church was first planted among the rice farmers of North-West Cambodia in the mid-1920s. Growth was slow and painful. Then fifty years of nearly fruitless toil culminated in the incredible debade of the 1970s, when joyous spiritual awakening was juxtaposed with indescribable devastation. Communist rule forced the massively depleted Church underground in Cambodia, drove it across into Thailands crowded camps, and scattered it across six continents. At that time almost all the mature leadership perished under the Khmer Rouge. The camps are now closed; the Church is free, and the time is ripe for growth and development. Killing Fields, Living Fields tells this complex story through the lives and testimonies of a handful of strategic Christians. Don Cormack, who has himself spent over 20 years among the Cambodian people, adds the background of Cambodian life, history and culture.

Larry Dinkins
Do missionaries realize how weird they are? Some of them do. Laugh and cry with Larry and Paula Dinkins through their first term of missionary service. A must for those on the missions committee or considering service. Their first term didnt produce even the hint of a halo, but it did produce in them a greater determination to be more like the one they had gone to serve.
Stuart from London, England Honest, gritty & thought provoking read. This book caused me to think more about the issues of mission that anybody else, or any other book. Its style is easy to engage with, and will leave you thinking seriously about how you would act and react if you were there. A book I would recommend to everybody who has a desire to get into missions. HAZZARD WARNING this book has the potential to change your mind. Not for those with a romantic view of mission.
Hazel from Glasgow Great book, shame about the cover. This is a really honest, funny and readable book. Shame the front cover is so dull. Still, its cheap. Its about what new missionaries have to go through. Excellent preparation for summer trips etc.

This is the autobiography of Pauline Hamilton. Why did this doctor of physiology work with delinquent boys? Why did Pauline Hamilton choose to march to a different drum than her contemporaries, to experience danger and hardship in China and Taiwan rather than security and prosperity in the USA? Only because the God who saved her from suicide and gave her meaning to life had called, and as she obeyed she found Him faithful beyond all expectation.

What frightened Mei most was that when her husband, Han, was angry, he exercised no restraint. With one hand, he would hold her hands behind her back and with the other, he would pound her, punching ruthlessly. One day Han took Mei to a bar. Stay and work here today. Ill come back later and get you, he said. Mei worked as usual, serving drinks, but when one customer wanted more, she went straight to her manager. She hadnt agreed to anything like that. But the manager was unrelenting. You must do it! he ordered. Fuming, Mei went to the phone and called her husband. His words were unbelievable. Just stay there, and do what they tell you, said the man on the other end of the line. The man who, for a hefty sum, had sold his own wife into prostitution. Mei, like many of Taiwans working class, was entangled in abuse, addiction and idol worship. Her life seemed hopeless, with no way out. Could anyone save her? As Mei lay in bed, a cool breeze swept over her. There was no window or fan, but by now she was used to such strange occurrences. The breeze blew into her and she started to tremble. Go to the top of the house. At the sound of the voice, the spirits that usually surrounded Mei scattered. She shuffled to the roof. Hold out your hands. Mei extended her arms, her body forming the shape of a cross. Two beams of light came down and touched her hands. I am huo shen, the fire God, Mei thought she heard. Years would pass before she realised what had really been said the difference lying in two typically insignificant Chinese characters I am huo zhe de shen, the living God.

One day sitting on our balcony in the Philippines with Buhid friends, I happened to remark that since it was mango season, why were there so few mangoes on a large tree that grew near the house. It hasnt been worked! said an old man with a staccato laugh. What do you mean by working a tree? I asked him. You see, the old man explained, from the time the new fruit appears on the tree, we gather dry leaves under the tree and make a bonfire. All the grubs that are feeding on the tree and on its fruit either drop off because of the choking smoke. And how often do you have to do that? Every day until the fruit is ready for picking! Smoking the Mango Trees is about a church. You probably know one just like it: established, big and branching out. Sure, the Christian community was well established, and the Bible was preached every week. But what happened once Sunday was over? The Bible remained in the pulpit and the weekly distraction that was church was forgotten in the daily routine. Martin Haworth shows how a church is worked through prayer and the move of the Holy Spirit. Haworths entrancing narrative style, coupled with careful teaching on developing a strong church, gives Smoking the Mango Trees a parable-like quality, which is delightful to read and an encouragement to our own church experience.

The story of ambush had shaken them. They are going to force you out. But you wont make it to Xichang. They will shoot you on the mountain pass. As the Communists gained control of China, foreigners were no longer welcome. The team packed what they could onto their mules and set out across the mountains. As they ascended the icy slopes, bleak mists closed in. The paths were treacherous, the future uncertain. Joan had spent years trying to get to China, facing setbacks, discouragement and opposition. But she was sure God wanted her in China. Finally, reaching the Great Cold Mountains, things seemed to fall into place. Living and working with the Broomhall family, Joan felt, for the first time in her life, that she belonged. Now she was being asked to leave. Did God really have a plan?

David W. Ellis
In the face of real fears, theory is not enough. When terrible things happen, can you really believe that God is in control, that God is love? In Nothing Else to Fear, Ellis uses Scripture and candid accounts of his own experiences in Indonesia to prove that God can be trusted. He doesnt offer a way to make your problems disappear. Instead, this humbling and awe-inspiring book will change the way you look at the world and your relationship with God.
Paul Levy, pastor of Int. Presbyterian Church from Ealing Great Stuff! This book is great stuff! David Ellis, who worked with OMF in Indonesia and across East Asia for decades, has done us all a favour. 158 pages of biblical and warm teaching. In some ways this book is difficult to classify as there are so many aspects to it. The 13 short chapters range from dangerous missionary stories to exposition and to a very helpful discussion of Islam and Western culture. It does not fit neatly into any genre. David Ellis recounts his time in Indonesia telling of incidents where he and his family were in physical danger, but, more importantly, he teaches us with great biblical wisdom how he dealt with those fears and dangers. Other helpful chapters deal with providence and suffering and theres also a stirring exposition of Psalm 2. Some chapters did not follow one another., At times it felt like a collection of missionary letters, but this is a small quibble. This plea for wholehearted, sensible, sacrificial Christian living did me the world of good and would do the same for you. I echo the words of Ajith Fernando who wrote on the inside cover: I nee to read books like this regularly to help maintain my spiritual glow. Buy and read!!

Barbara Reed
Has anyone ever told you about the prophecy handed down from our fathers? Suklinyan asked. Our fathers told us that white teachers would come into our area and we were to listen and obey their teaching, and we would be able to recognize them because they would know our language. A strange thrill went down my spine. I turned toward Russell and we looked at each other, speechless. We knew of no other outsider who could speak Tawbuid. Leaving home and family, enduring separation from their children for long periods, Russell and Barbara Reed dedicated their entire lives to bringing the gospel to the Tawbuid in the Philippines. Buoyed by the prayers of partners back in the United States, reinforcement workers on the field and Gods powerful presence, they persevered to reach the goal. How might God use you in creating another breakthrough among those who have yet to hear?

Tim Challies from Oakville, Ontario An Excellent Biography This biography is well-written, inspiring and highly-recommended. It presents Liddell as he really was and helps the reader understand the foundation for his life. It portrays Liddell in his strength and in his weakness, through joy and sadness. It portrays the consistency of a man who lived in the same way when the eyes of the nation were upon him, or when he stood only before the eyes of the Lord.
Includes black and white pictures and significant dates in Eric Liddell's life. Eric Liddell was a rare kind of man. He is remembered not only as an Olympian, exemplary Christian missionary and educator, but as an outstanding ambassador of his generation.

The moving autobiography of Wu Yung, one of Asias foremost Christian leaders. Foreword by James Hudson Taylor III. This book is filled with human interest stories illustrating personal faith, struggle and service A fascinating story of the pilgrimage of Christian faith from a contemporary Chinese leader I own the land you want. After my wife and I prayed together this morning, we decided to give this land over to you. Such was the miraculous beginning of the church in Taiwan led by Wu Yung. From a wasted childhood, continually in trouble with the British police in Singapore and then on the run during the Japanese occupation of China, Wu Yungs eventual escape to Taiwan led to his dramatic conversion to Christianity and the establishment of an evangelical church, seminary and training centre for thousands of young Chinese people. Wu Yung was no academic or theologian but upheld a lifelong disciplined approach to prayer and Bible study. I believe spiritual people produce spiritual work. If the church considers only methods and systems, the work produced will be wood, hay and stubble. Wu Yungs personal experiences of faith in God provide the reader with valuable insights into effective church witness and itinerant world-wide ministry.

What do I do when all I think I can do I have done, and there is no result? While still at school Patrick began to hear Gods calling to Japan. He recalls: I devised my plan for the future. I never prayed much about it. I assumed it would all be good and pleasing to the Lord. There was little wrong with my plan. In fact, there was only one thing wrong with my plan; it was my plan for my life. But as I prayed, I began to see things differently. I asked the Lord what he wanted me to do with my life. I became truly willing to do anything. One thing after another confirmed that Japan was the anything God had in store for Patrick. Obediently Patrick moved to Japan and began trying to share the gospel. He persevered in week after week of evangelistic rallies and hour after hour of door-to-door meetings, yet nothing seemed to come of it all. If this was Gods will why was there so little fruit? Patrick had tried everything he could think of to reach the Japanese and nothing had worked. What was he supposed to do now?

Pastor Hsi
It was two or three years now since the drought had set in. At first people hoped for the best. Not until crop after crop had failed did the growing anxiety break out into painful distress. Crowds flocked to the temples to entreat the Higher Powers. Theatricals were arranged to propitiate the hard-hearted Gods. Processions were daily led by devil-worshippers frantic with excitement, or mediums under the influence of spirit-possession. But all without avail. Until at length famine gaunt, relentless, awful stared them in the face. Surely people would start to wake up to the falsity of the idols, from whom no answer came? The promise of immortality held out by the Taoists had attracted him, but as his health began to give way, he had to acknowledge it was a terrible delusion. Confucianism had left him unsatisfied, Buddhism had brought him no help. Yet surely there must be Higher Powers? Gods that made man, did they not pity him? Ah, if only it were true as the foreigners said, that the heart of God was full of love toward men and that even common people might approach him in prayer and be sure of his attention what would he give for such a faith as that! Hsi Shengmo followed Taoism, Buddhism and even became a Confucian scholar but found dissatisfaction in them all. Turning to opium his life slowly began to fall apart until westerners in Chinese dress came to Pingyang proclaiming the One True God

Faith Cook
To What Purpose?
by
Marshall Broomhall
Faith Cook shares her first-hand story of her trials faced by a child of missionary parents living in China during the turbulent period of the Second World War and the subsequent Communist takeover. Many young people today have known much emotional deprivation early in life. This story of childhood in a war-torn country may well help them to reconcile their painful experiences with Gods loving-kindness and his purposes of grace for them. It may indeed encourage all who read it to appreciate in a new way the care and mercy of God, overruling even the tragedies of life and turning them to good for his people. A novel of abuse and healing by Ayako Miura
by
Joshua K. Ogawa
Ayako Miura
In this unusual and thoughtprovoking book, Joshua K Ogawa share his experiences as a Japanese missionary in Indonesia, from the traumas of losing a child and living through a riot to the day-byday labour of building up a church. His perspectives on church history and growth, on missionary life and work, are refreshingly different. Through this book we can understand more of the unity of east and west in working together to fulfil the purpose for which we are called: Gods unlimited purpose.
This story commences with a five year old Japanese girl, Kiyomi, whose mother is a prostitute. It captures the depth of hurt, and need for healing and wholeness, so much a part of todays dysfunctional family. Kiyomis story also illustrates, without maddening pat answers, that the bitter pain of abandonment, ridicule, betrayal and revenge need not be the final experience.

China
Bill Wilson
China is poised to play a most significant role in the third millennium. This authoritative history by Dr Broomhall traces the influences of Protestant and Catholic missions and the work of the United Bible Societies during the 19th century on the development of modern-day China. Whereas previous historians in this field had worked mainly from secondary sources, Dr Boomhall drew on the first-hand observations, most significantly by his great uncle, James Hudson Taylor, founder of the China Inland Mission, who was described by the historian K.S. Latourette as one of the four or five most influential foreigners who came to China in the midnineteenth century. Special Features: Based on a wealth of first-hand documents from the OMF archives. The five years that followed World War II were the most significant in the history of modern missions. They saw the door close on nearly one quarter of the worlds population as China, the worlds largest mission field, came under communist domination. Mission work had often been dangerous in China, but for over a century Western misssionaries had freely entered China to preach all across its vast regions. But by the end of 1950 all that had changed. Most Protestant missions had already withdrawn. Now the largest mission in the world, the China Inland Mission, realized that open Christian witness in China had become impossible. But did the decision come too late? This book tells the inspiring story of their exodus from China.

China Road
by
Rob Gifford
China is a country on the move, and Route 312 is the artery along which 150 million Chinese are daily travelling in search of work and a better life. Running 3000 miles from the eastcoast boomtown of Shanghai to the border of Kazakhstan in the northwest, crossing many ethnic and provincial boundaries, it is the transcontinental road that Rob Gifford has always wanted to travel. Part personal pilgrimage, part reportage, Giffords book cuts right through the middle of the turmoil. Sometimes poignant, often funny and always engaging, the authors quest to get to the heart of the new China and his ability to talk to everyone across the social spectrum, makes China Road an outstanding travel narrative. The author writes: As I prepare to set off on muy journey along Route 312, theres one big question that I want to answer: which is it going to be for China greatness or implosion? Can the country really become the twenty-first-century superpower that many predict? Or could it all collapse like the Soviet Union, weighed down by the legacies of the past and sunk by the contradictions of the present? And if it does go on to greatness, what kind of country will China be? Can it ever make the transition to a modern, democratic state?

Cross Currents
by
Jonathan Fuller
You challenged us to love Muslims and to pray that the Lord would bless them through our lives. Im afraid this is something I cannot do because I dont love Muslims and I dont want Muslims in heaven I didnt know what to say, but the pastor broke the silence. For many minutes he shared stories - the encounter between Islam and Christianity through the eyes and heart of one man. History came alive for me that afternoon, and I hung up the phone and wept. Weaving through the dates and events of history and the personal stories of Filipino Muslims and Christians, author Jonathan Fuller has written Cross-Currents in the hope that it will help break down the barriers of fear and mistrust between Muslims and Christians. Using stories, including his own, Jon presents a basic history of Islam in the Philippines and its encounter with Christianity, urging the reader to see Gods eternal sovereinity in history - that all of history is His story. Cross-Currents is a sincere and timely book that will challenge your understanding of Christian witness and compel you to ask: What does it truly mean to live out the truth of the Gospel?

Thanks to our information-rich society and the availability of travel, a lot of ignorance about the mission field has been discarded. Churches seem much better educated about the nature and needs of the mission field. But what about the missionaries themselves? What are the facts and fiction about them? What are they like? What do they need? Many North American churches are content to keep their missionary clothed in Supermans costume. They prefer not to probe too deeply beneath the surface. The secular media often goes to the extreme, zeroing in on Clark Kent, and ridiculing him for his human fallibility. The truth obviously lies somewhere between these two extremes, and if we want to pray intelligently for and support our missionaries, we must make a greater effort to separate the fantasies from the facts.

The recent growth and renewal of Buddhism, especially in the West, is a phenomenon of the last half century and is likely to increase into the 21st century. The interlacing of Buddhism and Christianity seems to be a growing fashion at the folk religion level. The clouding of differences between Buddhism and Christianity can only be clarified as we clearly understand the principles and precepts foundational to both. So many think that these two great religious systems are quite similar. Actually they are extremely different at many points. This book is needed today. It will help Christians and Buddhists alike understand each other better. Many Christians are largely ignorant of Buddhism and many Buddhists know little of fundamental Christian foundations. There are many varieties of both groups. This complicates simplicity of explanation. Section 1 analyzes contemporary folk Buddhism, its growths and contrasts. Section 2 focuses on principles for effective communication in local cultures.

Paul Hattaway
Paul Hattaway graphically presents prayer profiles of more than 200 Buddhist people groups around the world in this beautifully illustrated resource for intercessors, mobilizers, church missions teams seeking to adopt a people group, and missions strategists seeking to work among the least reached peoples. In addition, various experts have contributed 13 articles on various aspects of Buddhism to help readers pray more effectively. Hattaway has managed to portray the Buddhist world in a personal way, drawing on his experience of more than 15 years living and working in Asia to powerfully communicate the heart beat of Jesus Christ for Buddhist people. This book follows on in the style of Hattaways Operation China and several other prayer books he has authored in recent years. Peoples of the Buddhist World takes the reader on a journey through the heart of Buddhism, featuring people groups and articles on 18 countries like China, Mongolia, Japan, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Bhutan, Nepal, India, Russia, Sri Lanka and others. So what do you want from life? This book helps you thin through the future is God calling you to something altogether more important and more satisfying? If you are serious about Jesus, My Rights My God wil help you think through what serving him with your life really means.
John Adams from Northern Ireland A must read for CUs We had this book plugged at a houseparty, but CU members may not know about it. I used it in my hall Bible study and we heard some of the CD tracks. (Very stimulating especially John Stott, and youve got to hear George Verwer!) Loads of CU members go on summer programmes with OM, SIM, AIM etc but here they see the long-term questions they need to be asking. There are cartoons in the book, it isnt heavy to read but the content is very challenging. It finishes with about three pages of websites for people to look at.
***** five stars arent enough.... This is a really great book. Its so easy to read and all the text is broken up with stories and so on. Im happy to recommend it to anyone - life changing in its dealing with what we call our rights and what He wants from us.

Miraculous Healing
by
Henry Frost
Frost sees all healing as coming from God. Miraculous indicates that healing takes place apart from means. He is anxious to hold all truth in careful equipoise and writes in constant prayer. He looks carefully at the teaching of those who claim that the wholeness of salvation includes physical healing for all as well as spiritual. He examines the texts they use and points out where they appear to err, weighing up the arguments for inevitable healing. He sees the Epistle of James as being written to an emerging Jewish Christian church, spiritually undeveloped, and the instructions in chapter five permissive rather than mandatory. Among his general conclusions he makes it clear that Christ heals today but exercises His own loving sovereignty in so doing Christ will choose health, strength and length of daysthe saint is ever to remain submissive to Gods will whatever this may mean. The book ends with a moving testimony of healing within his own family.

Steppe by Step
by
Hugh P. Kemp
A nomadic culture renown for its violent history, in a land of temperature extremes and barren planes. Amongst the legends of Khans and cruelty, few would guess that Mongolia was once ruled by a series of Christian monarchs. With a history of Christian rule, why at the close of the 20th century were there but a handful of Christian believers scattered across Mongolia? The nomadic tradition made outreach nearly impossible and missionary work seemed to bear little fruit. But today we see thousands of Mongolian believers meeting regularly and reaching out to their own people. How has such a dramatic revival happened? Mongolias history may conjure up images of fierce warfare across expanses of tundra. But it was no godforsaken land. Kemps account of evangelists on the steppes, working in arduous conditions, and some with a deep sense of loneliness, shows us inspiring exmapls of perseverance and sacrifice. The story of the Mongolian church forces us to re-evaluate our own commitment to Christ as we learn of the missionaries courage in taking the gospel to hidden peoples. Steppe by Step will take you from the beginnings of Christianity in Mongolia and bring you right up to date with a church growing beyond anyones expectation.
Hugh Kemp shines a bright and welcome light on Mongolia past and present. Who would have thought that Kublai Khans mother was a Christian or that Mongolia had several Christian queens? Around the world Christians are seeing that God is doing a new work in Mongolia, where a burgeoning Church is making Jesus known to a new generation. Peter Lewis, Cornerstone Evangelical Church

Glory in Mongolia
by
Rick Leatherwood
In the mid-1980s the country of Mongolia seemed an almost insurmountable challenge as to how it could be reached with the gospel. It was locked behind the walls of communism with no church, no believers, no missionaries within its far off borders. The Mongol people had never heard that a man named Jesus ever walked on the earth. However, on Jan. 28 1987, diplomatic relations were established with the United States. Later that year an American tourist led a Mongol to the Lord and the following year another Mongol came to Christ, and from those humble beginning Glory in Mongolia tells the remarkable story of a movement that now numbers more than 40,000 believers proclaiming Jesus Christ is Lord.

Chuck Lowe
Over the last decade, a new theory and practice of spiritual warfare has taken hold around the world. This teaching proposes the existence of a newly-discovered class of demons territorial spirits whose function is to rule over specific jurisdictions of different sizes. Along with this theory has come a new practice of spiritual warfare: ruling demons are named, their territoris identified, and they are then bound or cursed. Evangelism and mission are then said to proceed rapidly with dramatic results. Chuch Lowe examins the full range of biblical, intertestamental, historical and empirical evidence cited in promotion of this new teaching. Lowe, a lecturer at Singapore Bible College, affirms that we need to be involved in spiritual warfare and proposes a more biblically legitimate and effective model.

Who is My Neighbour?
Britain has always been a multi-cultural society. From Roman invasion to the present day, people from many nations tribes and ethnic groups have landed on these shores. Not all come to settle and live; many visit, coming for further study, business purposes and sightseeing. As the races, cultures and religions of the world arrive on our doorstep, we are presented with exciting opportunities. The Christian is called to love their neighbour. To love someone we must understand them. What are their backgrounds? What do they believe? What are their problems and how can we help? Rosemary Harley and Martin Goldsmith tackle these questions clearly and practically, as we are challenged to witness to people of all backgrounds and religious faiths through our actions and attitudes.

TWO MESSIAHS
By Jeff Morton
When you meet a Muslim, you meet a person who loves Jesus. Muslims will tell you a true Muslim must love Jesus. Jesus is not the sole property of Christians they say or is he? This story sets the Jesus of Islam, Isa ibn am-Maryam (Muhammads seventh century conception of the first century prophet and Messiah), in direct conversation with the first century, historic Jesus of Nazareth. The reader encounters Isa and Jesus on a long walk from the little town of Emmaus to Jerusalem, a walk filled with conversation, questions, brief interaction with others, and observations from each man about the other. In the end, it is clear to the reader who Jesus is in both Islam and Christianity.

1-2-1 Discipleship
by
Christine Dillon
Getting people to make decisions and cross the line between death and new life is vital. But what comes afterwards? Many Christians are frustrated, longing for a deeper relationship with God. They want to make an impact for the Kingdom and to share their faith in a way that works, but are unsure how to go about it. Stuck in a rut, they are oblivious to how different their Christian lives could be. How can we help people to discover the fruitful lives and intimate relationship God intended them for? Pauls answer was simple. He said, Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. Evangelism and discipleship are part of the same great process and this book is for all those who have ever wondered what Jesus meant when he said make disciples.

R. Arthur Mathews
Dr. Neil Anderson of Freedom in Christ Ministries writes in his foreword: There was a time I thought I could explain the world through the grid of my Western rational and natural world view. When I turned to Christ for my own salvation, I was taught how to explain the failure of humanity by the nature of the fallen world and the ongoing struggle with the flesh. I learned about the kingdom of God but was taught little about the kingdom of darkness. Then someone put Arthur Mathews book Born for Battle in my hands and I began to understand the nature of the spiritual battle that believers are called to engage in. Born for Battle is one of those Christian classics that needs to be read again and again by every generation. I trust it will do as much for you as it has done for me. This is not a book of leadership theory. We have enough of those already. We need to develop skills that are part of the requirements for effective leadership. Allan tells us how, and the appeal of the book is that this is authentic stuff from a man of God who knows what he is talking about. David Pickard. Allan Webbs book gets straight to the point about what makes a good Christian leader : Influence, Spiritual Authority, Vision and Faith, Servanthood, Lifelong Development, Calling and Equipping, and Competencies. He deals with these topics in 7 chapters, that each begin with insightful premises. This is the sort of book that would work well as a small group study, or in a short course on leadership in a church. Its relatively short (good for busy Singaporeans), an excellent read, practical and biblical, complete with questions for reflection and learning tasks to jolt any passive reader to search his or her own soul.

This book approaches the subject of hell sympathetically yet honestly. Through a series of letters to a young Christian it addresses all the common issues surrounding death and hell, including the justice of God, whether sincerity is enough, and the validity of other faiths. The precise mechanics of hell are not its chief concern, but that Christians take seriously their responsibility to share the gospel with those who have not heard.
Dicks correspondence with Paul is never less than clear about the fate of the unsaved. Yet there is real humanity and empathy in what he writes. In places it is a solemn, shattering read. But ultimately it bears witness to the greatest hope of all Rev. Dr. David Hilborn, Head of Theology Evangelical Alliance, UK

A man boldly ventures into the unknown in response to Gods call. But he blithely resorts to deception when he fears for his own safety. Sterling faith and striking failure. Yet God uses him in a way beyond his imagination. In the book By Faith and Failure: When God Takes Hold of Right Steps and Wrong Turns, Rev Dr David Harley, who has studied and taught on Abraham for decades, deftly opens up a remarkable life. This booklet aims to meet this need for sane scriptural advice in this crucial area. Price: $4 (AUS) 187
Serving Grace
by
Michael Griffths
The purpose of this book is to look afresh at the scriptural teaching about gifts. In the light of this teaching, why have many churches failed to recognise Gods provision for effective ministry? Dr Michael Griffiths argues that these wretched little quotation marks have become divisive and sectarian. Can we not search the Scriptures together in such a way that we come close to agreement about what the Lord has given us for the perfecting and up-building of the church? We should, he urges, seek the Lords serving grace.

Here is a thrilling and current story of a young missionary serving among the Clan people: When I was in the Middle Kingdom last month, the Lord graciously gave me a dream while I was sleeping during a long bus trip. In that dream about setting the prisoners free, he gave me a greater vision of seeing and tasting the joy of the captives set free. The captives are of course Clan souls and the one who holds them captive is the evil one. I know God lovingly gave me this powerful dream to teach me several things: his wisdom, his humility, and to do his will cheerfully and with great anticipation!
