13. ukuleles learn basic chords and rhythms to accompany many songs. Proceed to plucking melody notes Students will: Hold chords taught Enjoy playing music with uke Be able to have all strings sound in chord formation Observation while in group and individual students Have students show me uke in the air with proper formation 10 ukuleles 10 print outs of Day-O to be shared by 2 Pictures on powerpoint of fingerings/tabs for D and A7. (3:40) *start playing fun music on the ukie uke uke. Establish ground rules for hand up means quiet time, listen to me, no strumming until I say. -practice this a couple times (accompanied with praise.) What do you remember about the ukulele from last class? (have go into 2 or groups) on the count of three you will find someone you havent talked to today and tell them what you know about this in 10 seconds. Ready?!.... GO!!! (count down ten seconds) Excellent!! So, today we are going to learn a little more about the ukulele! SO the ukulele has a lot of similarities to the human body. *ask about head/neck/body/etc. All within 3 min (3:43) Choose groups of kids who are being the best behaved to get Ukes -when they get ukes: bring them back to chairs and place case under seat ED 2500 Orientation to Teaching Instructor: Kurtis Hewson

and hold ukes without making noise. Teach how to hold: place body above/on hip. Use right arm as a wing and place forearm in line with neck pressing below strings on the body with elbow/forearm. Introduce Day-O by showing how it will sound Within 5 min (3:48) Practicing fingering A7 Place left thumb across back of neck. Take index finger and place it on the second string closest to your face. Now move that finger to the 1st fret or gate. (3:50) D Place left thumb across back of the neck. Take index finger and place on the first, second, and third strings in the second fret OR do the position for A7 and then just slide it up to second fret and give it 2 body guards (fingers) on either side. (3:53) Have practice muscle memory of fingering D and A7 -On D. Off On A7 -On D off... On A7 Take 2 min (3:54) Show on paper where chords are positioned and when they should play. -Practice this WITHOUT strumming 1st time really slowly. -Practice second time with strumming but slow again. FILLER!!!!! (2-7 min) -Teach how to chuck Find a partner and show them a D chord Find a different partner and show them the A7 chord -Have sit, congratulate them, put Ukes away. (4:00) FILLER!!! Find partner and show them how to chuck
