Grammar
We can say: Gustav Eiffel built the Eiffel Tower in Paris between 1887 and 1889. This sentence is active and Gustav Eiffel is the subject of the sentence. Or we can say: The Eiffel Tower was built in Paris between 1887 and 1889 by Gustav Eiffel. This sentence is passive and the Eiffel Tower is now the subject of the sentence. We use by to say who did the action. This is an example of the past simple passive. The passive is formed by using to be + the past participle of the verb. G > page 141
