DEAR FRIENDS,
“Deep in the forest, there’s an unexpected clearing
that can only be reached by someone who has lost his way.”
(Tomas Transtriémer. 1931-. Sweden)
The Swedish autlor leads us suaight into the celebiation of tie Paschal Mystery, if we dare lw be
“lost” with Jesus, we'll reach the lightful clearing of His Resurrection. May the Holy Spirit help us to
live our daily lives ever more consciously in the Mysterium Paschale
Since the last miniletter of Advent and Christmas 2008, and the New Year 2009 again joyful
marriages took place and funerals were held, especially for Fr. Bob Ronald, $.J. (1932 2009) on January
10, 2009 in the dark evening at Changhua SJ cemetery, for the mother (1924-2009) of Sr. Pascal Ding.
OS.U, on March 28, 2009 in an ocean of beautiful flowers, for Sr. Luc, C.S.T. (1909-2009) on April 4,
2009, and for Fr. Istvan Jaschko, S.J. (1911-2009) on April 7, 2009 in the presence of President Ma
Yingjiu ROC. Only the Triune God knows how much good these fiiends did to so many persons in
different situations of need, of sickness and of being handicapped. EASTER is the divine response to
their exemplary livesThe 8 days of January 28-February 5, 2009were dedicated for the annual retreat of 2008('),
obviously a sign that leprosy service during the summer 2008, as a former miniletter described, took all
the time left. No need to mention, that the Sisters of the Sacred Heart with their helpers in the Sacred
Heart Retreat Center cared very well for this belated retreatant. In the precious silence with the Triune
God the idea, to care better for my recent lack of good sleep with the help of specialists, surfaced with
commanding clarity. Recent consultations show good results. Deo gratias!
After the retreat, on February 6-7, 2009 the annual meeting of CRSS (Casa Ricci Social Services, in
Macau) and CLS (China Leprosy Service, in Taipei, represented by myself and secretary Cindy Tseng,
who calls herself most recently “Meilan”, in Chinese: a Rose with an Orchid), other important
participants wish not to be mentioned by name, took place in Macau at the office of CRSS. There is
never time enough to discuss in detail the many aspects of our common service to leprosy patients
(nowadays called “persons suffering from Hansen disease”) in China, e.g.: the shoemaking issue, the
ongoing formation in medical expertise and spiritual growth of Sisters serving in the 20 leprosaria spread
over China, the support of the Eye-unit with Dr, Tang Xin, the care for the children of leprosy patients,
new projects, the search for new benefactors, e.g. the German speaking Catholic Community of
Hongkong with Mr, Klaus Walter as Pastoral Assistant, and the delicate question of prudent cooperation
with Government officials in the PRC (People’s Republic of China). During the meeting we had the
opportunity to listen to Fr. Alberto Rossa, C.M.F. (Claretian Missionaries) describing the efforts to
promote the so called “Pastoral Bible”, at present printed in various languages, including Chinese,
amounting to 60,000,000 copies. At the “Fu Jen Theological Publications Association”, for which I am
responsible, we try to support Fr. Rossa with exact biblical data for the desired improvement of certain
passages
Each year CLS has to gather the members of the Association in order to take a hard look at the actual
work and the budget-issue; we met on March 7, 2009, including the election of the Director of CLS for
the next term of 2 years, the burden fell again on me.
The surprise visit of Dr. Gao Guoxiong, whom I met on November 28,1983 in Beijing, March 13-20,
2009,proved our lasting friendship. The next miniletter in June 2009 will describe the sabbatical year
(October 2009-May 2010). In deep gratitude, blessing you aloisius (luis) gutheinz sj
