In conversation: Jay Kleinberg and Jessie Ramey on gender and social policy in the US, 1880-2000

Friday 28th June 5pm, Institute for Historical Research, Senate House room G21A, London
This event sees historians Jay Kleinberg (Brunel University) and Jessie Ramey (University of Pittsburgh) come together to discuss their work and explore the connections between their scholarship, particularly the myriad of links between Rameys Childcare in Black and White: Working Parents and the History of Orphanages (2012) and Kleinbergs The Shadow of the Mill: Working-Class Families in Pittsburgh, 1870-1907 (1989) and Widows and Orphans First: The Family Economy and Social Welfare Policy, 1880-1939 (2006). Both have written extensively on issues surrounding gender, families, working-class employment, welfare and social policy from the late nineteenth century onwards. They also share a bond with Pittsburgh that has informed both their lives and their writings. Kleinberg based her first book on a case study of the city and completed her undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the University of Pittsburgh, where Ramey is now an ACLS New Faculty Fellow in the same department. Coming together in conversation for the first time gives them the opportunity to share their thoughts and perspectives with a wider academic audience. The discussion is followed by a wine reception at 6pm. It is free to attend. The event is kindly supported by the Institute for Historical Research and the Society for the History of Women in the Americas (SHAW). For more information, please email shawsociety@gmail.com.
