Academic English Support Language Arts/Elective 9-12 ELD 1, 2 or equivalent LENGTH: Year

COURSE CONTENT: English Support is an intensive intervention course where students actively learn and apply academic English that is designed to help them prepare for the high stakes testing that they will encounter at the high school level. These skills directly support the California Common Core English Language Arts Standards, the California English Language Arts Standards and ELD standards for grades 9-12, and college and career readiness. The curriculum is designed to accelerate higher level linguistic skills in English learners who currently have agility with social interactional English. It will engage students through high-interest topics that are relevant to adolescents lives and concerns. The informational texts help students feel connected, informed and eager to take a stance on a variety of topics (Kinsella, 2011). Students will learn to effectively use academic language through reading, writing, discussing, and presenting on a routine basis. The student learning and performance goals are supported with academic vocabulary, grammar, group and individual discussion and reflection, writing, and speeches.
