What is ACT-SO? ACT-SO is an acronym for Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and
Scientific Olympics. It is an enrichment program that culminates into a competition, sponsored
by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). It's referred to as
the “Olympics of the Mind”.
ACT-SO FACTS
There are 25 categories of competition (see list below)
1 individual can compete in up to 3 categories
No group competitions; only individuals
Must be African American, in grades 9 -12, an amateur, and a US citizen
Must compete in local competition to qualify for national competition
Dead line for sign up is April 23, 2009.
Categories of Competition
Youth can compete in all of the Sciences plus, Music Composition, Original Essay,
Playwriting, Poetry, Dance, Dramatics, Music Instrumental Classical & Contemporary,
Music Vocal Classical Contemporary, Oratory, Drawing, Painting, Sculpturing,
Filmmaking/Video, Architecture, Photography, and Entrepreneurship.
