Character of Richard III

The main thing that marked the character of Richard III was his physical deformity. It shaped him as a person, directed him to develop in a certain way. Richard III was, in short, a hunchbacked freak. He was prematurely born, without harmonic facial proportions. It made him a bitter, envious man who cursed nature for making him the way he was. He blames Mother Nature for entering this world too early, thus leaving him deformed, unfinished and cheated. These strong, harsh words that he uses show the way he feels about himself, about his physical appearance. He even confesses that dogs bark at him when he passes - that is how revolting his appearance is. Richard III is not only bitter because of his fate, but he is also envious of the king. He criticizes kings behavior, revealing at the same time how much he would want to be in kings place. He nags about kings neglecting his reign and spending time with women. However, at the same time, he regrets for not being able to court women and enjoy them. His regret is even stronger because he is aware how useful he was before. He was a good warrior, he had a purpose and he was performing his duty with excellence. However, now he does not have his function, he lost his purpose and all he can do is complain about his deformity. This fact makes him feel a strong guiltiness and bitterness. He feels that he cannot be anything else but a villain, because nothing else remained. That is the reason why he wants to separate his brothers, to make them argue between each other by playing with their minds, making them believe that other one is making a conspiracy. Richard III is also well-aware of his strong sides he knows how to be subtle and how to talk people into doing something he wants. In other words, his inability to be what he wants to be makes him a villain that wants to ruin other peoples lives, too. In short, we could say that Richard III is a victim of his own bad luck, of his own ill fate. His physical deformity also made him deformed from the inside.
